finaly got to the point where you could tell you had a serious power decline.
in the early part I went thru all the”must be the humidity or the water conditions “ excuses but the decline just slowly progressed.
a lot of the 496s had the paint degrade very quickly and it was a very noticeable power drop Quickly.
mine was more like a water tap that with each use someone would turn it a 1/4 more off till one day it was almost completely off.
the whole process took mine a couple years.
it sure was a sweet trip the first day I put it on the water after I cleaned it out...

BUP cleaned and flow tested my injectors. All basket filters in the injectors were full of paint flakes. Two were almost plugged up to the extent where it was suggested to compression test the cylinders as they had to have been lean. Luckily, everything was ok. To keep from happening, I cleaned fuel rails and stripped all internal paint of Gen 3 cool fuel. Lay it up right in offseason and no more worries.

Notice paint flakes in bottom left corner of bag.

mine is a 2006 and it took a couple of years so very slowly declining in power and top end.

also the paint gets in the system post (after)the fuel pumps not before.
the paint chips are large and definitely can not get thru the pump strainers let alone pass thru the pump gears of two fuel pumps and still be in chip form when they exit in to the fuel rail.

Is there an easy way to check if the paint in the cool fuel assembly has deteriorated? Would be nice to diagnose before it becomes an issue and blocks the injectors.
To the OP, more good info but it still sticks in my mind that your revs are spot on, the prop shaft is turning at the right revs so the issue is not the engine.

to date it has not reoccurred and doubt it will since i striped the fuel cooler of all paint and removed all the lines and fuel rail and cleaned them out.

if any internal paint is left behind regardless it can get in the basket filters of the fuel injectors. You can even see it in the baskets filters that Ryan posted pics of. as his cool fuel was painted so the lifted paint does travel regardless. I know I did the service. on the injectors. It is very common. Great if all your paint is stripped 100 percent out but hopefully with all the paint gone Aluminum oxide corrosion wont take place.or the rubber hold down grommets do not degrade over the long haul.
You have to clean and remove all sections 100 percent from paint internally of the cool fuel - for one the whole section the fuel pumps sit in is painted as well.internally - the paint peels in there to. it can be ground up into very fine particles - it will pass thru and collect into the basket filters of the injectors.and if its finer than the basket filters -- it will pass thru.into the injectors. The basket filters are not as low micron rated as one would think... The surface area is very small for the basket filters in the fuel injectors so the micron ratings can not be too small cause it will restrict fuel flow badly..
to add -- the top section of the regulator can get paint internally for the outlet fuel line side.

In the pics -- that hole is the fuel outlet / fuel line. There is paint and some aluminum corrosion inside all the way as far as I can get in with q tips. The q tips have paint thinner on it. And my finger has paint flakes on it. Any of that paint or corrosion is on the way to the fuel injectors.
I cleaned the fuel injectors and ordered the new cool fuel as it does not have any internal paint plus drains water with front blue plug. The high pressure fuel pump had paint in it. - The injectors had paint in them as well. - the fuel pumps where half dead. Actually the internal paint issue is nothing new - very old news and has been around since the gen 3 cool fuel came out 13 years ago.
