509 build intake selection
Has anyone used a Holley fabricated sheet metal sniper intake?
was curious how it compares the go to single plane victor jr style |
How much HP are you shooting for?
I ran the dart intake on mine. |
And don't rule out the RPM airgap. If you're 600hp or under it has proven to haves gobs more torque in the midrange with very little loss on top. I can't answer about the Holley intake though.
|
I am hopping for 600 want to keep the rpm’s below 5800 What I have so far eq heads, cmi’s e tops, 1050 dominator 9 to 1 static i really like the looks of the fab aluminum |
The Sniper intake does look cool. The dual model with twin sniper injectors would be bad ass. I haven’t seen any reviews yet.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...f870796b1.jpeg |
So i started comparing it the a team g and it appears to have a lower operating range than a team g or vic jr
I really think would perform I just wish someone had some real world experience I called Holley and that was not helpful at all |
It does look cool so I checked it out myself. It seems to be unstable with any sort of heat and the bilge is quite toasty. They seem to be for you weekend hot rodders. I’ll steer clear of it myself. |
This may be interest to you. You can skip on down to where they played with the Team G manifold. Get More Power from a Chevrolet Performance ZZ502 Crate Engine |
I second the RPM Airgap but not sure if it would start choking out at the 600hp mark. Would be great in torque averages throughout the curve for sure.
|
What is so confusing to me is all the high horse power Merc engines use Vic jr style or open plenum tunnel ram style intakes but when you look at the operating ranges on paper they would not work |

if you go Vic Jr it will need some work, this one was matched to a 525 head |

I was shocked at how small the Victor Jr ports are when I laid a gasket over them. They leave a lot of material in there so you can match whatever heads you have. The airgap isn’t as bad but I still took some time to hog it out. |
F2 did removing all the meat help? |
The engine wasn't dyno'd before and after, it just makes sense to port match for flow
|
Smitty has done some dyno time with the Victor Jr. You can see his input on the last couple pages of my build thread if your interested. https://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...ml#post4645354 |
At the power your aiming for and your CI I'd tend to go single plane and port match. Dual plane do have awesome torque but think you'll sacrifice at top end. I only mention port matching because of your build. Honestly seen up to 50 hp gains on dyno back to back. Valako will verify. Some builds makes no difference or very minimal. Heck I've even ran Valako raised floor heads with a stock rec port intake and had no power loss. It was a weekend deal to get on the water but interesting. That was with a 454 build though with much less power. Look into the Merlin X intake. I'm not a big fan of them however seems like a lot of guys like them. NA 565 builds I'm using the brodix hv2001 unless I go back to sc. cross section and runner length is something to be considered also. Just my opinion.. |

I really appreciate everyone's thoughts and input, baja and getr have really good points. This is allot of money for me ( doing this twice) so i just want to maximize what i get and learn from other peoples mistakes. i was worried about port matching for some reason i thought that would change the port velocity. Baja I have a extra power steering pump, but it is for a serpentine system
|
The brass lined Merlin single plane intake is a solid choice.

That looks like a rebranded Merlin.

Bill Mitchell was part of World Products (WP had the Merlin name) in the sense of BillMitchell Hardcore was the biggest retail/wholesale company for World Products. and then purchased the aluminum product side of World Products. So,most of these are under the BMP name instead of the Merlin name. That's my memory...as old and decripet as it is. :) |
thats correct BM is / was / sells Merlin

Has anyone used the manifold in a setup like mine? |
What cam do you have? What boat is this going in? |
33 outlaw still undecided was thinking of a 741 or a bob m special |
Bob M has been thrashed on here enough, but what pretty much came of it was a lot of his stuff were Crane clones often the 741 being the most used. Teague also copies the Cranes by just a couple degrees here and there to keep the lawyers happy. I went with the Comp Cams 525EFI cam which is the same as the 741 but 114lsa instead of the 112lsa to help fight reversion. My last cam had 110lsa and even with dry to the tip headers my valve seats were getting some rust. The 33 Outlaw is a Baja favorite. Great boat! |
What kind of power you making? what kind of exhaust you running thanks for the complement on my boat is was a barn find was tied up in a estate dealio been sitting on a rack in dry storage since 2007 has a little under 100 hrs on hull needs clean up and interior in cockpit but excited to get working on it |
I haven’t gotten to fire it up yet so who knows, lol. I have Edelbrock Performer RPM heads with a lot of chamber work, 10:1, rpm airgap manifold, CMI headers, 525EFI cam. I’d guess it should be about ~600hp with the heads and manifold topping out there. The Baja section isn’t as active as it once was, but I’d ask in there about power setups as that’s a popular boat a lot of users may have experience with. I built my engine for more all around performance, plus I’m already on the edge of what a Bravo drive can handle. |

Actually I was waiting for someone else to dog me like he always does. |
After realizing majority of boats use I'd give up a little power and look at the dual plane and go out and have fun. Not worth squeezing every bit of hp out of something that will not see WOT often and you can taylor the build around your needs. I've used dual planes for years and loved them. Again your CI gives you the flexibility without sacrificing a significant amount of power either way. |
