Crooks, it’s not so much a matter of what I want vs what it takes to survive. If you have EFI you probably have an IAC, a carb doesn’t. With an IAC you might be able to hold a 50 rpm in and out of gear difference. When there’s no fuel air control you have to open the throttle blades to the position they need to be in order to idle in gear. When there’s no load on the engine this throttle position results in a higher idle. By retarding the timing you can counter the effects of the throttle blades being open further than they need to be in neutral. Once in gear and the rpm drops, the ignition will advance to regain the rpm lost when the timing was retarded. At least that’s the theory as I understand. Will confirm this very soon. |

on my datalogs, most if the time its in gear , its idling at 36*. I plan to try lowering the stabilzation set point to 600, and see if it will still idle in gear in the no wake zones at 16*. Only because i think the engine sounds better with 16* at idle. |
Do we know if the ide stabilization Is progressive or the full set amount? |

Not progressive. Its either 16 or 36.

So the CD-1 is not a timing control box or timing computer per se, but like the 6AL with a retard and starting retard module. I thought it could be programmed like the thunderbolt module with a timing map.

you can do a 2d rpm based custom timing map as well. idle stabilization is what isnt progressive. Once the set point is triggered, the stabilization simply adds the amount of timing you programmed it to add. |
I just looked through the instructions and have a better idea on its capabilities. I don't like the 22 degree control limit, and see how that could be causing problems here. Is it 22 at max or can it be 22 plus the idle comp retard. I would think phasing the rotor correctly would reduce the chances of crossfire.

It happens within split seconds once the rpm rises above the set point. You can watch it do its thing on the datalogs. Once you pull it out of gear, and the rpm rises, it goes right back to the base timing number.
