temp sending unit

temp sending unit
I recently built a new SBC 350 to replace my mercruiser 260.
I used Edelbrock aluminum heads and want to put my temp sending unit in the port on the head instead of in the intake manifold where it was in the previous engine. For now I am keeping the same gauges that were in the boat from 1980.
The problem I am having is that the port on the head for the temp sensor is 3/8 npt and the old temp sensor was 1/2 npt. Can I just buy most any temp sender that will fit my head and assume that it will work properly with my gauge? There are some numbers stamped on the old temp sensor, but searching on them doesn't get me much in the way of specs. About the only thing I can find out about it is the range is 240 DS. Not sure what DS means.
Thanks for the advice,
Russ

Any reason you can't just install sender back in the intake? What gauges you have? Some gafrig/livorsi etc require their own but sometimes generics work. Can be a hit and miss. Just don't use pipe tape or dope on threads.

might need to bore the center a bit to unshroud the probe end,
