Gimbal leak
Hey guys, back again. Last time When I lost my hydraulic steering lines, I noticed a gimbal leak. I had all bellows replaced, block plate 5200 and 5200 on entire perimeter of housing. Still leaking, small streamer. Any common weak points, boat sits on lift always, leak probably has long history, always had water in bilge, thought it came the exhaust holes...... |
Get yourself one of those endoscopes you attach to your phone,. They are under 10 bucks on Amazon,. You can get it in lots of places to look for the leakk, the seal on the upper pin is a frequent culprit, .
|
I have seen the rear cover on bravos leak and fill the shift cavity with water and it has come in through the cable hole.....I'll be devils advocate here...is the transom rotted?? If it is you will never get it to seal without fixing that. Hope not!!

Top steering pin aka swivel shaft is most likely where its leaking

Had the boat in the water, submerged 50% of gimbal housing, No leaks, will try full immersion later today and video again. Top seal could be the player, boat sits on lift all the time.. I guess under way it would not leak either... thanks guys!,, |
Gimbal leak
not looking like a pivot seal, no water leaking from above shaft... |
Does it have a Y pipe for silent choice? If so I had the same issue (thought it was the steering swivel too) and it was the O ring where the y pipe mates to the inner transom assembly.
|
No Y pipe just those 3 streamers in the photos. Thinking maybe trim indicator wire plug failed. Will check. Half submerged no leak... |
Gimbal leak
Just removed the starboard gimble housing on our Fountain. Leaking horribly. Picking up a new transom assy Tuesday in Lauderdale. Happily the other two were done before we got the boat.
|
Just scoped my starboard housing with the leak; rotted right through on several areas. Shot...new gimbal time. Port does not look much better but isn’t Leaking yet... |
Are the gimbal rings made of steel, I think it my worst corrosion/electrolysis problem impacting my pivot seal....https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...4be87becc1.pnghttps://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...13e1b9866e.png https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...93084345fe.png |
The HP assembly has a stainless ring. I live in swfl also it’s good practice when your done flushing/washing /cleaning to reload the salt away cup and spray inside the gimbles really good. I do that since you can’t actually reach in there with a rag and wash it. Then crc656 everything really good. |
Looks like it might br time for upper pins. Just did mine last winter and went with the stainless ones hoping to not have to do them again. Good luck
|
Cancel all, leak turned out to be blocking plate leak, 5300 and all stopped. Good to go. Still ugly but useable... |
blocking plate ?? do you mean the block off for the exhaust water ypipe ??? if so did you have to pull the engine or what did you do to fix it? is block off plate bad or is the oring bad.
|
If I had everything apart and transom assembly looks in bad shape...I’d just replace the whole thing for $2500 and call it a day. That’s what we did. |

Suspect the gasket was bad, unable to tighten so 5300 worked for now without pulling engine. If fails again then probably looking at pull engine and replace all. |
