Default Seal for Repairing Drive Lube Container

1996 Merc 7.4 MPI with square drive lube bottle.

The sealant where the wires come out of my drive lube container is leaking fluid. What product have you successfully used to reseal the wires?

It's also leaking from the plastic hose barb and was loose. Would you recommend just tightening or replacing with brass?

Thanks for any help you can lend!

Keith

They make plastic epoxy which could seal it if its cleaned free of oil. Another bottle would be best
Is the leak on the hose maybe just the hose needs replaced?

Do yourself a favor and just buy a new one, replace both if a twin application. While your at it replace your drive and tab reservoirs also. All these plastic "bottles" and "tanks" become brittle and porous over time.

Its shot and the bottle comes 3 different ways per 3 different part numbers. It lasted 25 years so its time for a new one.

Like was said, just get new bottle. They are about $50 for the bottle with a new cap.

Just will add the price can be lower or higher depending on which bottle is needed. There is 3 different bottles with 3 different part numbers. These are set up per which way the gear oil fitting is position at the base of the bottle. They are positioned and tighten per that position and not be changed from the factory set positions.

Well Damn John now ya tell me. Of course the one I ordered is in the incorrect position (by 90*) from where I need it.

Went ahead with a new one considering the cost of $40 shipped compared with finding a sealant for the leak at the wire penetration. It's cost and time and effort isn't worth the $30 savings.

That's why I posted what I did. More times than not the wrong bottle gets ordered. I have them in stock all 3. It would have best just to contact me and I would steered you straight for what you need to buy where ever or if I just sold you the correct one. Much easier that way if one does not know and the odds are that the wrong bottle gets ordered. This is not uncommon. Just saying.

For the record I get that call a lot from boaters " How do you install the new bottle because the fitting is in the way -- I just bought it online "

And for the record the current bottles are made in Korea and do not last like they use to. They will leak thru the wires / epoxy in due time.
