engine oil cooler
looking for suggests on GOOD engine oil cooler. replaced my old ones 3 years, went with MR.COOL 700 cooler,,three years one has failed!!!!!!!!!!!
WTF........ and will be a major job,,,,as it is mounted to the stringer, down below,,in the i cant reach it zone. i will be mounting new up somewhere. i have seen photos mounted behind motor. so any suggestions, who has been a oil longer than 3 years,,,i would never buy anything from MR.COOL again....wont even give a break on new one. thanks.. |
I bought a MR Cool oil cooler direct replace the for my 8.1/496. Besides the fact that the fitting were in the wrong location, the quality didn't come close to the factory mercury. The cooler was thinner with stamped (thinner)ends in it compared to the cast (thicker) ends on the Merc. I sent it back for a refund and bought the Merc.

I bought mine from Diamond Performance Parts. Bill was excellent to deal with, I am sure he would be honest on the life expectancy.
|
I got mine from CP PERFORMANCE about 10 years ago. No problems yet.

I have mine mounted on the back of the engine on a 2"x4"x12" piece of angled aluminum. Been mounted this way since 2006. I had to notch the bottom around the bell housing. It's bolted to the 2 threaded holes in the bell housing. . https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...46d7aba28e.jpg |
I have the Dan Olsen style coolers, you have to control water flow instead of oil to regulate oil temp but I like how compact they are and they don’t require oil lines. Can also disassemble them and clean/rebuilt

hello rookie,,
well i guess,,to a certain piont, i am lucky i have closed coolant syste,,or motor would be full of water and oil. so,,i was going to winterize the fresh water side,,lake water goes to strainer then oil ,,trans coolers then to crank driven water pump then up to heat exchanger then headers,so did the port motor all was good,,then took hose off johnson pump ,,,was loooking for alaittle water to come out,,instead i get about 1/4 cup of engine oil... i was .........wtf........called mr .cool...said well they are three years old,,,maybe i didnt winterize correct,,honestly i really dont need to winterize anything ,,as boat sits in my insulted heated garage.. i will be mounting them similar to yours rookie,,,first is oil out of boat..but then if i cant get them out ,,buying new one anyways,,,just have to also buy trans cooler.. thanks advice,,,post photo,,i have a starter and remote oil filter to deal with.. thanks again https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1415bdeac3.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...98785cdee3.jpg |

This is how I set mine up. Similar to Rookie’s.

Filter heads on yours will be an issue to deal with.
|
ahhhh,,,like it..someone with similiat set up..
what brand to you have here TOMZ and comment on my filter head??? thanks... think i am going to just forget about existing cooler,,will never get it out..screw it,,just add new one across back of motor thanks... |
I made the bracket out of 1/4-inch plate. The cooler is an older CP Performance piece with a built-in thermostat. It’s soec’d to handle 700 hp. The tube brackets are also from CP Performance.
Regarding your filter heads, I guess you could OffshoreOnly the cooler a good amount to keep the end of the cooler away from the filter. I wanted it centered on mine. As seen in the pic, I used an HP4 filter head that sets the filter up vertical. It all fits together really well. But I’ve seen others where the cooler is greatly offset. I didn’t have the room to do that with my boat. |
hey tomz...
maybe i can move my oil filter.......... but where https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5709e08576.jpg is your trans cooler??? mine was all plumbed together in straight line mounted to stringer,,,worked great till now,,and i honestly dont think i can get coolers out,,without pulling motor. have to look at it more.....old photo old cooler,,but same location.. thanks...... |
You might be able to get them out after taking off the inboard exhaust but it will be a tight, holy hell cussing event (if I was it doing anyway).
I run my trans cooler in-line on the engines. First stop after the water pump is the trans cooler then onto the oil cooler. They’re oversized but fit on the side of the engine, barely. I’m surprised the cooler let go. Can you pressure test in the boat? |
how would i do that???
this all started winterizeing freshway side,,when i took hose off my crank driven water pump,,,oil came out,,about 1/4 cup..maybe 1/2 cup... checked motor and motor in motor was real good and clean as i had just changed oil month prior.. and do you see how crazy fit my engine area is??? man which i had staggered motors.. |
You can make adapters to hook to your oil likes to be able to put air pressure to it with a leak down tester. I know it’s tight in there. I have the very same issues.
|
tomz..........
interesting....i do have a leak down tester,,,from me drag racing days..still must get into it,,,but so...so..tight but thanks for idea... |
