(NJ) What scan tool for 2011 Mercruiser 8.2 Mag H.O.’s? And other advice…
First off hello all and thank you for the opportunity to join here and reach out for some assistance.
I’ve spent some time googling but can’t find anyone looking for a scan tool for my specific engines….
My new to me boat is a 2012 Monterey 328 SS with twin Merc 8.2 430 Mag H.O.’s with around 350 freshwater hours. I picked the boat up back in November and water tested it and it had the minor fault two beeps at the time. It ran up to 59mph and sounded great- ended water test early due to a leaking balance hose sending raw fuel all over the top of the starboard engine. Guy gave me a pretty decent deal so I took the boat without any further testing/survey. I found the hose on eBay for $20 and fixed it. Brought it home to NJ from Chicago, winterized it and began ordering parts throughout the winter that I wanted to change/upgrade. Just finished up R&Ring both Bravo 3X’s, some bellows service, a new through the transom oil fitting on my port engine because the plastic nipple snapped (WHAT A B****), etc. Had the boat all ready to go plop it in my slip tomorrow because it’s supposed to be sunny and 73° and start my season early when I ran both engines on muffs and got the dreaded six beeps when I turn on either engine on.
I see recommendations for numerous scan tools for the Merc 502 and even though my 8.2’s are technically 502 ci it is my understanding that is a different engine.
My 8.2 Mag EC HO’s are 2011 models with freshwater cooling and DTS. What brand/model scan tool and adapter would the board experts recommend? Port engine kicks on, six beeps and will run fine on land, but as soon as I turn over the starboard engine I get the six beeps and the small lcd screen under my analog gauges shows that engine going into guardian mode and the idle rpm’s hunt from 800-1200. Local Monterey dealer can’t see the boat for three weeks and I’d like to get a head start and see if it’s possibly a sensor that just needs replacing on either (or both) engines.
Also, since this boat has twin engines I know a lot of the harness wiring comes up into an electrical “closet” under my helm, is that where I would hook into? Or am I still plugging into a diagnostic port directly into each individual engine? I’m new to twin engine setups and have no clue…. My only prior boat was a Bayliner with a single 4.5 MPI 250 with a B3 and I had the VesselView dongle that was a big help for me when it came to nuisance faults.
Engine serial numbers are: 1A352445 and 1A352494.
TL/DR: recommendation for a scan tool for 2011 Merc 8.2 Mag HO’s. Or if you have and are in the New Jersey area and can loan/rent/ assist me I’ll gladly pay you.

You mention 8.2 HO EC and 8.2 HO, the EC means it has Catalyst exhaust
If you have CAT's then you need Rinda connectors 94029 and 94032. Then choose either Techmate or Diacom
https://www.rinda.com/rindashop/?sfi...tic-converters
Techmate is a 3 line handheld scanner that is easy to read and portable. Will provide full function but does not record data for review later
Diacom is software that loads on a laptop. Full function using laptop screen to display a lot more data at one time, also will record so can be reviewed later

Looking to pick up a Rinda or better yet, is there one that is Blue Tooth/Wifi wireless? I run one in my diesel van and it's great to see the data on a tablet or phone whenever you want while driving.

A new 94070m cost $649 (comes with needed adapters) bought through Rinda
I saved $224. I didn't ask at the time but assume it has latest software. If the SW needs to be updated it will cost $189 so there went the savings
I have the original Techmate and adapters for MEFI's and 555 but it cannot be upgraded
