I bought the boat with this engine on the basis of a survey that said it ran well, and the owner having spent ~ $5k having the top end rebuilt (skimmed & valve seats). Clearly the last owner has fancied himself an engine builder - the heads are not original casting#6272292, and the cam has been swapped at some point. I would say based on my teardown that the lifters were also replaced when the heads were refreshed, they look brand new.

Afraid I have no records to say where they came from.

Thanks
Will

Hi All,

Just an update on this - after the leaving the boat alone for a week whilst I sourced gaskets, oil had drained back to sump and slivers of copper clearly visible in heads and v of engine.

Likely thrust bearing or a very worn big end I am told. Looks like the engine is coming out.

This happened on the first trip out after changing the oil filter ~ just coincidence or something I did wrong here?

Thanks
Will

Make sure that isnt from copper colored valve spring shims. It kind of rare from bearing material to get to the heads and valley area. Almost impossible for it to get to the heads.

oh man the plot thickens .. I was about to pull the trigger on a rebuild.

So I guess it would be worth running it at least now I have rebuilt the valve train - I pulled all the lifters, cleaned them and set the lash, then saw the copper and figured an immediate write off..

Could be. I would run it a half hour or so on the muffs and then pull the filter and cut it open and look for metal. If its clean run it an hour or so easy in the water and look at the filter again.
