Default 33 ZX Question

Hello Donzi people. I currently have a pristine 2000 26ZX with only 67 hours (will be listing it soon) and I'm looking to upgrade to a 33ZX in the 2003 or 2004 range.

My question is this: I'm considering the 33 ZX Daytona listed here and elsewhere, but I'm not a big fan of the engine cover intake scoops, as it takes up too much valuable sun gathering real estate. Are these scoops purely cosmetic or are they actually needed to provide additional clearance for the blown motors. I would prefer to swap this out with a standard cushioned cover. Anyone have any ideas on this?

thanks,

If you don't want blower motors I have a nice 2000 with 500efi's I'm thinking about putting on the market. Sorry don't know for sure about the scoops.

On my 38zx Daytona the scoops had nothing to do with blower clearance, in fact they are not even centered over the engines. They do nothing for you other than looks and fresh air!

Young gun is pretty accurate.. Unless you are running some big coolers & have some larger height needs you should be able to do without the scoops, although you do want to make sure you are letting enough air in..

As far as cosmetically, My wife is not fond of them either.. I personally can take them or leave em'... Also yes you will find that the factory scoops are not centered over top of the engines from the factory, it has more to do with air flow.. Jamie

As everyone said (No) they are there for more air and looks but not for blower room, all the 33ZX models used Mercruiser 575s or 600s and they are low deck engines, I have 496s in mine and even if I stuck whipples on top there is pleanty of room, if you change out the hatch go with the hatch they made for the newer 33ZX smaller pad but has 2 Vents on each side that will give you pleanty of air, If you decide to remove the scoops and put on a pad you will have to add air.

Thanks guys. That's what I expected, but wanted to make sure. I've already called Pier 57 to get a quote on a new engine cover.
