late 90s 22 zx questions

I just joined this forum and am was hoping to get some advice about buying a late 90s 22 zx with a 350 in it. Also if anyone has any general knowledge of this model in particular? I found a 1999 pretty close to where I live (about 200 miles) It has around 300 hours and seems to be clean and in very good shape. I have heard this boat will do around 65 mph is that correct? Does anyone know what a fair price would be and where to get a loan(I dont think this dealer finances)? They are asking $19,000 and it does not include a trailer. I usually drive me dads 20 ft sea ray during the summer but it only goes about 45 and I want a fast boat for this season... Any answers would be much appreciated thanks!

The 22ZX is a nice hull. I don't remember what it will do with a 350. I know it will run 70 or so on a good day with a 454 mag and around 73 with a 502 mag. A procharged 350 runs high 70's.

Jamie at Lakeside restorations is in your state. He is a Donzi guy and has worked on one. If he does not chime drop me a pm and I will give you his number. I think he is an advertiser here.

There are some guys on donzi.net that know them well. You may want to check that out.

Depending on load, gear ratio, prop etc, the late 22zx's ran about 55-60mph gps speeds with 350 mag mpi B1 & a step bottom. If you are looking at an earlier one I would expect it to be little slower unless it is enhanced a bit. Otherwise that power in those usually gives you 55-57 on most days with a light load.. ;)

That said I have added boost to them & got them into the 75-80mph range on 350mag mpi's.. :) Jamie

Ok here is the trick question? 350 or 350 Mag, Alpha drive or Bravo drive? What is the pitchon the prop, I have sold many of the 22ZXs BEWARE of the 350 Mags with the Alpha drives they did not hold up, to much HP running through a drive that was only good for 300hp not 310 also the 22ZX is a heavy boat 3800lbs dry, they switched to the Bravos in the 2001 up the boat with a 350 Mag on saltwater would run 62, on fresh 58. On a 1999 $19,000 without a trailer in this market is high just sold a 1998 with a trailer and a 502/415hp for $11,000
Best of Luck

Hi Thanks for all the answers. I am located in Conshohoken PA and will be using the boat at the jersey shore. I looked and the boat is a 350 mag they say with all factory options. So it probably does have the older alpha drive because it is a 99'. How much would it cost if I ever had to replace the drive ?because I do plan on supercharging it when I have the extra money. If the boat was well maintained with 300 hours how long do you think the alpha drive would hold up before supercharging?

Wow, youre pretty close, we are only about 2 hours north of you in PA. (Im in the Scranton Wilkes-Barre area)..

At 300 hours you are a bit on the higher side to think of adding a blower now. Although not that it hasnt been or couldnt be done. I would do a compression & leakdown test first though before putting a lot of thought into it. You would need to make sure the insides are happy first, at least I do.. Also if you have a bravo it is fine for boost or more power in that boat within reason, however if it does have the alpha I would not recomend doing anything over an exhaust upgrade to it. The drives are just too light to really put up with that boat & a lot more power.. Feel free to give me a shout if you ever want to chat about the Donzi's.. :) Jamie

Thanks Jamie,I just found out its got the bravo drive which I am very happy about. How much would be a fair deal for this boat from a broker without a trailer? And about how much would I be looking at to supercharge it if it has good compression? How about a cam and cylynder heads?

Cam and heads will help, but if you want to really feel it, boost is the way to go. Check it out good then haul it over to Jamie. You won't regret it.

J, you got any pics of that custom boost gauge setup you did on that 22 you Procharged? That was a cool install.
