Blew By BAJA
Had the 26ZX out this weekend. Made my buddies 25 outlaws look like they were standing still. One has a 454 with a vortch and the other has a 540
|
What kind of power in your boat?
|
Currently running a 502 that has been bored and stroked with roughly 700hp. I have close to 25K in the motor

Not really apples to apples, but it sure is fun to walk right by them. When you run around on the Mississippi in Iowa and Wisconsin, everyone breathes BAJA so it is always fun to blow by them.
|
Awesome. Keep up the good work.
|
Same power per boat and the 26ZX Donzi is still faster...one of the fastest 26 offshore boats back when it came out and is still an excellent performer.
I was always impressed by the speed numbers of this boat in the magazine tests. |

Alright, very good......but you are in code violation......WHERE'S THE PIX????? You always have to have a camera handy for these special moments of you progressively leaving someone behind. It's kinda like giving someone a tow, you always have to take a picture. Make us proud Joey, put up some pix! |
Nice, I do a little Baja dusting too.
Like Fever here says, it is a faster hull. Had a guy in an Outlaw come gunning for me last summer. I am sure that he was toting 650+ hp and was driving like he stole it. I let him have a little fun and then passed him like he was tied to the dock. There is another 26ZX on my lake with the exact same paint job as mine so he probably had me confused with him. The other ZX is a 68 mph boat. I let the Baja run with me to the high 70's and then dropped the hammer. He was very surprised. You should be seeing 80+ with 700 hp. That is a good number for that boat. Some like to walk around a bit in the high 70's but then ride like on rails after that. At least to 85 or so. Above that it is a balancing act of tabs and trim. What kind of numbers are you seeing so far? |

That sounds about right. My friend Bryan had similar numbers in his 27ZX twin step. His is one of the first out of the mold and had a light layup. Our steps and pad have the same dimensions. He has another lower strake. |
Glad to hear that you are doing Donzi justice. I've surprised a few guys who thought 22 Classics were 65 mph boats...........:coolcowboy:
|
Still testing props. I saw 76 with a 32 at 4600 RPMS. Trying out a Mercury Racing Labbed 30, but I broke m tach last time I was out, so I did not want to beat on it to much without being able to monitor the RPM's. With the stock 502 running 5psi, I sam 79.8 on GPS, so I am guessing 85ish

Hey Joey, keep us posted on the prop thing. I have not had success with labbed Bravo's with the hull but who knows. It might be just what you need to get into the right part of the curve so always worth trying. |
What would you suggest for a prop? I tried a 28 and it was okay, but that is when my tach broke so not quite sure how it was
|
I have an old Baja that would make you Donzi guys wish you were still at the dock...... even you Carl (thirdchildhood).
SO THERE............................................. :evilb: |

You do need to bring that mini me down to AOTH. We have a lot of fun and it is a great crowd. It is not really a contest or anything. Just a bunch of guys that love to run their boats and have fun. My fav is watching the guys in the 16's run. There are a few that look like they rolled off the showroom last week and the guys run them like they stole them. Watching these guys launch is a site to see. Big air in little boats and they go right back into them. Heck I ran it hard in my X-18 and the beatings were pretty good. The 16's....some of those guys have big ones. The Awakening of the Horses is a large time. |

Good to see Donzis kickin butt!!! Had a 22 Classic that ran 77-78 with a 509 and a bravo 27P 3 blade. Lots of fun and a great wave jumper!

I see you have moved to a Bullet. I almost did that myself once. Nice choice. I am a fan. |

OK guys I think I need to start a thread about how I have never been beat by a Donzi.... which is true. The first post of this thread has NO merit if the other boat had stock power so why bring it up.
As for the 100 mph plus guy's lets take it out on the big lake and see what happens. I work on all kinds of boats but at any given time there are 1 or 2 Donzi's in my shop. When I decided to add another smaller boat to run with my clients I chose another Baja. For some reason Baja gets a bad rap on the net and I will be the first 1 to agree that the pre 1990 boats were pretty much poor quality builds but since then I would put their quality eqaul to or better than most production boats in thier price range. Some of you I am sure have seen some of my work. |
BAJA gets a bad reputation because it is known as the Bayliner of Offshore racing. You want a cheap boat that everyone can afford, then buy a BAJA. As for the first post, read again yes one had stock power but it is a 540 and that boat runs 80mph. The other boat has a 454 with a Vortech blower making 5psi of boost, this one is not so stock.

Maybe you need to reread my last post. I bought another Baja because it is a better built boat than a Donzi. I did not say Donzi in my post because I did not want to be an idiot like yourself and degrade somebody else's boat but there you have it.
I have first hand experience taking them both brands apart and rebuilding them. In fact I am redoing a 2004 22 Donzi classic at this time because of a cracked hull, drive not installed correctly from factory causing serous handling issues and just a piss poor rigging job. This is the second deck and hull this boat has had as the first hull was so bad that Donzi warranted it in 2006. The owner went down to Florida while they were building his new deck and hull. He was able to do a walk through of the factory and he told me that on his tour there were 2 Mexicans doing a transom cutout. Mexican 1 stood back as Mexican 2 held the drilling jig and Mexican 1 said that looks good to me. Most likely the reason his drive was mounted on an angle on his boat along with most of the rigging on his transom. I have done several walk through's at the Baja factory and dam if I did not see 1 Mexican just good old American Ohio hard working people building a very good product. Get off your high horse and and quit bashing a brand you know nothing about...... make that 2 brands yours and mine. By the way my Baja beat Cigs, Donzis, Fountains, Active Thunders, Checkmates, Sunsations ect ect to many of the stops at all the poker runs that I have been involved with over the last 2 years. Not the fastest boat there but I can run it wide open all day long and do because I built it from the hull up. I also have this in my shop so my engines do not lie about what they make and what they are capable of doing. Whats your HP and TQ numbers again? Please by all means show me some of your first hand experience with both brands to prove me wrong. |

The motor was dynoed by Mark at Precision Marine. Here is a link to the Dyno sheet. |

I blow by Bajas all the time. Whats the big deal?
Ok Baja guys dont get mad but a buddy of mine calls them Mexican Bayliners, gets a chuckle every time. |
Baja is a price point boat and a good value for the money. Donzi is clearly a significant step up but realize it costs more and justifiably so. I loved my Donzi 38ZR but there is no way I could get the speed of a cat. Speed is all relative to how much $ you want to spend. Both boats are fine depending on your application and your own perceived value of how much money you can justify for boating.

I got a friend building a big block turbo for his 65mph donzi 22 cause us bajas where always blowing by him:evilb: haahaa oh boy but its true he will have 2000 hp going in a 22 when done it has a arneson drive on it already but if he uses more than 1000 hp he will blow it. a client of mine from nantucket bought a new 29 donzi back in the day, his kid would bring the donzi back from ocean running busted to chit every other time out, he said dad I told you we need a cig bullit so the old man bought a 38 tg. me and my 650hp baja never lost a run against any donzis even the cc . well instead of putting 1200hp in mine I looked at other boats and went with a real custom boat a saber 28 with a konrad ace drive speed will be around a 100 or more. at the boat shows the donzi 26 or 27 was maybe 10 grand more than a baja 25 or now 26. my 24 has been raced apba and run for18yrs in the ocean it was a handlaid up boat no chopper guns, colors were done by gel not paint and stickers like you guys. anyone in the cape cod or RI area this aug or fall if you can beat me I'll buy lunch. so there still both production boats that are priced close with same power. as soon as we hit 3 or 4 footers I will leave my friends 2000hp donzi in my wake:evilb: just as brian 41 will do to you with his 32 so whats your top speed if he is mid 90s what do you have for gps ? oh that 2000hp donzi will most likely pull away from our friends turbine 46 skater in the flat water well maybe not haaha. go have fun beating us baja guys I laughed for many years doing it to others here on the cape with even bigger boats. go gettem brian with the 24 the 2'' shortie made mine fly level and put abulkhead where the back seat is and one at the cabin it so its like the 25ol and 26ol. art
|
I highly doubt that a Baja 650HP would out run a Donzi with the same HP. I would put it up against mine or ZXXX and would guess that it would lose. What speed are you getting out of it? I would guess with 650HP you might be in the high 70's to low 80's
|
Bryan,
Your boat runs 89.1. Mine runs 103. I don't feel spanked. I hope that the 32 is faster in big water than my 26. It should. I do it on one engine and my numbers are real. Both dyno and GPS. |
Joey you need to lets this thread go. You seam to be missing the point to our posts..... you are bashing all Baja's with this thread and we are going to fight back. Either one of my Baja's will kick your ass in the rough my 32 will kick it anywhere you want it. Of coarse your Donzi will be faster with the same power its much smaller and lighter than a simular size Baja. I have been on OSO for nearly 10 years and I have never posted or started a thread that I beat anybodies boat but in this thread. So what you beat a stock Baja, brag about to someone who cares or does not understand.

Numbers don't lie. If you don't believe them then call MArk at Precision Marine, the number is on the dyno sheet. Ask him he he dynoed a 540 with a procharger with 5psi of boost for a guy in Iowa last August, I would have to say that he will tell you yes and that the sheet is real. Once again read the post it was 2 boats, 1 stock and 1 with a blower. I did not start the bashing if you read the beginning, I simply stated that I was out playing with my friends and that I blew by them, I even stated that the boats were not apples to apples,, but when everyone around you breathes BAJA, it is always fun to go by them in something else.
Go back and look at all the posts that I did last year, they will tell what I did to the boat and motor, if you still don't believe, well then come to Iowa and I will show you. |
I did not say that your engine does not make the HP stated. I said that the sheet did not provide enough information to verify the numbers. What were the BSFC numbers? What correction factor was used? If it had both actual and corrected numbers we could get some kind of idea about his correction factor.
