ZR and ZRC speeds

Let's see 'em! WOT, gear ratio, props, etc.

38' ZRC, staggered 525's, just ran 95.2 mph on GPS. 1:36 gears, 28" 5 blade Herings, on the limiter. 1 person on board, 1/4 tank of fuel. Basically a kilo set up minus the throttleman. 90+ degree temps though so not optimal.

Changing from the tractor pipes to wet, out the transom exhaust cost speed, as did making props friendlier for planing and acceleration.

Hit some cruiser wakes and the boat just laughed. Hey Tom A., maybe I'll keep it and put some big power under the hood? :coolcowboy:!

You never quit messing w/ the boats! We're sick for sure! Come to Miami and hang out w/ us.

When is it?

THEJOKER 06-12-2011 08:44 PM

This coming Thursday - Sunday! We're helping OPA w/ Pace Boat duties and they're filming a reality tv show. The Bimini Run , etc. Come on!

Twin Ron Potter 700's in my ZrC. :evilb:

After popping 3 Xr Drives, I am now running Imco SCX uppers and it feels just as fast.

1:50 gears, 32 5 blade herrings, rare 60 degree overcast day in Miami. 3 people, 1/2 fuel, perfect chop.

Tom A. 06-12-2011 10:13 PM

Mike, you will not find a better boat! SCX drives and 700hp = a boat that runs faster than any other 700 V and even with most 1075 V's.

Marginmn 06-12-2011 11:34 PM

Awesome results. Are you guys running shorties or standard length lowers? Tom, are the SCX uppers holding up well so far?

Tom A. 06-13-2011 06:32 AM

Standard length on the drives and I have the SC lowers. The SCX are so much beefier than the Xr's they look like a cross between the NXT's and Konrads. ?I only have a few hours on them so far so my fingers are still crossed but I am cautiously optimistic based on what everyone else has told me.

I don't have a good pic of the drives, don't mind the duck!:lolhit:

I know, I know. Just itching for the next project. Maybe that should be a more power project. Keep me informed on the drives.

Tks Tom,

If SCXs hold up I will likely go that route along with my imco sc lowers. Now I need to make some bucks so I can switch to a stagger set up. I can't imagine leaving 5 mph on the table :)

Holy crap, we all know how well OL does when it comes to actually showing up and putting up the numbers by now. how many years has it been since OL hasn't shown up for that top speed record again???????

I'll take TomA's numbers any day over OL banter

All you have to do is come for a ride. Tom's boat is very fast and faster than most but a SV43 OL does run 118-120mph with stock Mercury or Ilmor power. Tom you'll have to come north for a run as I dont think we'll be in AC this year. Any #'s since the SCX install?

I may have to come north to see you guys this year! If it weren't for my 1st wedding anniversary on Sept 24th, I would be doing the around Long Island race! With an extra 50 gallon tank, I could make it without stopping at 70mph!
As for comparing boats, yes any of the newer sit down OL's w/ 700s will give a run and probably beat me. But for an 8 year old boat.... I am doing all right! :drink: Dollar for dollar, there is nothing that touches a ZRC.
As for the SCX, I am not in a hurry to test the top speed. I have noticed no difference in speed vs. rpm through the range of 3500-4500. I had the props redone over the winter by B-Blades and that is skewing it a little too and giving me better bottom end. They did an amazing job! I can run 35mph at 2500 rpm and hit 60mph at 3500. By 4500 I am doing 85. I was running a fast idle of 1200 and the props started to aerate and the boat wanted to jump on plane. So far I am very happy with everything!

No question Tom. The ZRC is flat out unreal for the money. Fast, handles the rough like nobody's business, and is super comfortable. I am liking the idea of running 115 more and more!:evilb:

It looks too sweet to give up on it now!

Damn.... flying for that setup :drink: I've never looked into the Z's design, but what is it about the hull/setup that makes it so efficient for a deep v?

Anybody ran Ilmor's in them?

OL40SVX 06-14-2011 04:39 PM

An Ilmor ZRC has not been built. Would be great to see one with 725's and Indys. I will agree with you Tom the for the money you cant beat it! Come up tp the Old Saybrook run in July!!

I plan on taking these 710s out of the Fountain and putting them in ZRC # 0 0 1. I could use some paint ideas if anyone has any they think would look good on a ZRC.

miller001 06-20-2011 03:27 PM

We have a 2008 ZRC with 525's throttle up 33 pitch prop's and i'm seeing 94 mph @ 5300 and i'm showing 18% slip on the gauge
I'm going to try to pull the spacer's back out it ran faster and had less slip with out the spacer's but with the merc prop's

I know that boat very well. That boat has the newer four step bottom and runs real well. I know Gene Weeks had its sistership with 525's running 98mph. Not exactly sure what the set-up was but it seems like your on the right track.

kellyshooty 06-20-2011 04:07 PM

don't discount the dragon, true 39' boat and runs 105mph on stock 525's and likely 125mph on stock 700's

Awesome. I finally broke down and bought my own, and though she is for sale, if it does not move then I intend to take Tom A.'s advice and go with more power!!!

yeah, realistically mid 90's with the 525's. might squash triple digits in absolute perfect conditions but it would be a stretch IMO.

MDGperformance 06-22-2011 08:43 PM

My 2004 zrc has seen 98-99 on its best day usually see mid 90s with average fuel and 3-4 people on board,my boat has imco-3 ,imco extension boxes merc 525 1.5 drives herring 32 5 blades, would love to whipple the motors or build a set of 700 would give the boat the added acceleration and speed the hull desires would be perfect only problem would need to upgrade the drives to scx or arneson to keep reliability
