I usually tighten them good and tight.. maybe 50ft/lbs. The spiral washer should compress. Not sure how thick that makes them. That sets the proper height. Another thing to be aware of is the gimble bearing rotates in its own socket, so it can be wobbled around. If you put the tool in part way you can tilt it up and down and back and forth.
