Skeg Repair
Broke a portion of the skeg on port side lower unit. I was
running about 40 and felt a very light bump. Later that day got back to the slip raised her up and saw the result. Looks like
your garden variety, a-typical broken skeg, the bulk of the skeg remains intact. I plan to run the rest of the summer before fixing it. I will eventaully pull the lower unit and send it out for repair. Can they weld it up without gutting the lower unit?

Yes, it's done all the time. 2 years ago I broke the skeg clean off about 1" below the bullet on an Alpha drive. One of the local drive shops welded a new one on. The next year I bead blasted the lower case to get get it ready for new paint and you could hardly tell where the new skeg was welded on. Oh, by the way, the new skeg was installed with the drive still together!
