Default Blown Drive advice ....

poped a drive on Sunday .....

Still dont extent of the Damage but it busted the cap and looks like the drive gear is trashed .....

this is a 89 311 500-600 HP I am not sure if the drives are original.

Options?

Replace the drive ... Bravo I 3600 ( Actually I think I can beat that I have seen em for 3200)
Replace the upper ... 1750
Upgrade to XR upper .... 3000 (but then I will be running 1 BI and one XR)

Or fix the drive .... but then would still have a 15-18 year old drive ....

I really dont think I need the XR .... I dont beat on the drives ......

I am still searching for the right prop and we were running 29's with 4 adults and heavy fuel ... Lost top end but cruise was great ....not sure if it really had anything to do with the Failure ... Cruising at 60mph@3400 and boom ..... thanks ...m

With what you have there you are best off going with a complete reman. Even if you replace the upper you still need to go through the lower and get ALL the debris out and replace all the bearings, you will never get the metal particles out of them and they are probably scarfed anyway. As far as what to go with I would probably go with an XR, it would be ideal to replace both drives at once but I know that might be a little rough on the budget. You will be fine running one XR and one standard bravo and then upgrading the other drive when you can. I would not consider the mis-matched pair to be a permanent solution though.

Yea pretty much a done deal at least a new upper ...I forgot to mention when I pulled the prop the hub was spun ....There are NO signs of hitting anything ...I guess the drive made such an abrupt stop that inertia spun the prop?
I would like to know what happened ...and I want to try to see if these are original Drives ..if so ...19 years is pretty good .....m
