Default Upper B1 rebuild

Couple questions and info needed on my '99 #OL Bravo 1

How much side play is normal for the 2 driven gear thrust races in the housing and top cap race c-bores? I'm seeing approx .025 topcap, maybe .040- .050 housing. Towers look great and measure round.

Anyone know the measurement on the top cap, from the thrust bearing race surface to housing/top cap mating surface?

(I can't find any reference on those 2 questions.)

Lastly;
Upgrading the gear set to the newer gears per Mercs requirement.
Are these 'X' gears, for future reference? More importantly, the upgrade gears require thinner shims (both from .091 to .051) per the housing stamping. Is that all that's required as far as shimming the 2 driven gears with the pinion gear? My Merc service manual only makes mention of setting the pinion gear bearing preload.
Nothing remotely the same as far as setup compared to setting up the lower.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Default Bravo questions

.025 -.050 "side play" is pretty normal. The thrust washers have a "flat" load and pretty much center themselves as the gears/bearings spin.

Your new gears would be considered "X" gears. The new thrust washers are smaller because you will now be using the better, thicker clutch bearings/races. (one piece instead of two)

I would have to pull the dimensions you are asking for from some prints for our pre-X series drive caps. If memory serves me, there is a minor dimension change. We still make water cooled billet top caps for your application that will work with the conversion gear kit. You can use updated caps but your cap thrust washer would be a different size than the case t/washer. Gear back lash would need to be double checked as well...
