Alpha with external resevoir?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but since the gear oil doesn't really circulate, what's the point other than leak warning (IF it's wired in)? I've seen these on two different boats, with stock/mild small block power.
EDIT: just doing some reading and I guess the Gen II came with an external reservoir. The ones I've seen are Gen 1s drilled through the upper (port side) and have their own through hull w/stainless braided line.

Its also to prevent from to much pressure ( overflow ) !!
If a drive spins 4-5000 RPM the gears built pressure like on a pump and the oil needs to go somewhere or it will be to much for the O-RINGS ans SEALS !!!
