How do I get the U-joints out - TRS
The book shows using an adapter (I'v got a 1 1/4 socket over one end), then press it out.
i'm using a vise as the press, I tried that but nothing moves. I afraid to put more pressure on it, may break the yoke?? Please tell me how to do this. Thanks, Larry |
Been a while since I did a TRS. Make sure there are no clips on the inside holding the caps in place.
|
It has clips, but I already removed them.
Thanks |
Don't be afraid to put a little muscle into it baby. :D Put the caps under tension and then tap on the yokes a little bit with a ball-peen hammer if its really stuck. If they've been in there awhile it will take some pressure to get them to pop.

They have been wet (Salt water) and I figure they are'nt going to be easy, but i was scared to put too much pressure on it.
So, the answer is, I need a biiger Hammer, LOL Thanks |
YEP,,,bigger is always better ,,,THATS WHAT SHE SAID .LOL:drink:

You can put a little heat on them as well.
|
I agree with Audiofn. Fire is your friend................................
|
I was going to ask if I should put some heat on er.
I'll try it in the morning. THANKS |
Wear safety glasses if you put the torch too them. Sometimes you'll boil the grease out of them and it will spray out of the seals. A ball joint press like what you can rent at the auto part stores may be a little easier that a vise if you still have the shafts in the drive too. If you already have them out and doing it on a bench then nevermind.

Thanks Deezy,
Now that you mentioned it, I'm sure I would probly cook myself along with the bearing grease. Also, renting a ball joint press sounds like the right idea, i was having a time with the vise. |
If you couldn't get them out with a socket in a vice, you probably won't be able to get them out with a ball joint press either.Be careful not to damage anything, those parts are expensive,if you can find them.I would just take them to a transmission shop where they have the right tool and experience to press them apart. They probably wouldn't charge much. Then you could take them home, clean them up good, maybe sand the bores a little and reassemble them in your vice.

An arbor press is ideal if you have one or know somebody that does. Do you have the shaft out of the drive or is it still in?
|
I got them out.
Put them in the vice with pretty good pressure on it. Scared to death, I struck the yoke a coulpe times, and pop, it moved. After that it was just a matter of pressing them back and forth, I had put PB Buster on them too, think that helped. A flame was coming next but didnt need it. Thanks for the help Guys, Larry |
