Default Gimbel Ring Hole

OK Guys, it been a few years but I desided to go for a restoration project. IT is a 93 Sea Ray 250 Express Crusier. The project is just getting started: New Interior, carb, the engine has been serviced. As we were starting to sevice the outdrive we notice a small hole around the name plate of the gimbel ring.
My question is: will the hole be a problem if I run it in the water until I can replace the ring?

I tried to insert a picture, but cant seem to figure that out right now.

Could it be for a grease fitting?

DOnt think so. If I could figure out how to insert a picture you could see it look like it is corroded.

garywwelch,

To insert a picture, you use the paperclip symbol above the verbage box to attach an existing picture file to this posting.

Ahhh, what type of drive do you have?

On a Mercruiser the name plate is at the gimbal housing not the gimbal ring. A small hole in this area would be problematic, since it will likely leak into the upper pin area and into the bilge.

Sounds like you might need to add a gimbal housing to the restoration project. Fairly big project to repair correctly, since you'll need to remove the engine and transom assembly.

If that is the case ,,,,,, just 5200 a stainless screw in the hole,,just make shure its not too long and the aluminum is not completly roten !!!!!
That should seal it up . its not realy a structural major part,,but if the aluminum is gone u have more problems on the gimbal then u ask for.

Default Gimbel Housing

I used the words ring when I meant to say housing. I will try the patch until I get the opportunity to do it right. I plan to remover the entire outdrive and engine when I do the paint job, but that will be when the winter setup starts.

Thanks
