Default Shift arm removal on a bravo 1

Does anyone know if you can remove the shift arm (with the receiver that catches the the shift cable end) my cable keeps poping out if the holder and I removed the rear cover it seems loos but dosen't seems like it will come out the rear without removing the drive. 1995 Bravo one

Lightening.
I have never removed that piece without removing the drive and disconnecting the cable. The top cap needs to be removed and the shift rod bolts taken out and the rod slides up. You have to rotate the shift lever 90* clockwise in order for it to be removed from the case. Wheather or not it would release the cable end or not, I dont know. The proper way is to remove the drive. You could slide it back and release the cable and then pull the shift rod and remove the shift linkage.

Hope this helps.
