The shift cable should be dry of course. The only way I could imagine that happening is for either the shift shaft seal (in the upper) or rear cover "O" ring to leak. Even then there would most likely be a noticable loss of fluid in the drive oil reservoir. as the cavity ( in the upper and shift bellows) would have to fill, and then pressure from the gearcase, force the fluid through the cable sheath up to the motor. Possibly some one oiled the cable? Just not likely from the cable. Probably the leak is from somewhere else. Hope you find more info as this quite curious.

I had water coming up one cable and dripping on the cover. I sealed up the cable end at the drive and it went away. So, I suppose oil could get up there if the shift shaft seal and/or rear cover rings are leaking.
