Default TRS / Borg-warner?

Forgive my ignorance. This is my first Offshore boat and first boat with a tranny. I am getting ready to sea trial our boat 1979 Carrera with a TRS and Borg Warner. My question is boat has been sitting for a long time. I plan on replacing all fluids before sea trial what else should be done and what fluids do you suggest.

For the drive you'll want to use Mercury High Performance Gear Lube.3 quarts in the drive and 1 in the reservoir in side the boat.Let old lube drain out all night. In the tranny the manual calls for Dexron,or Type F or any which meet Type C3 specifications.2 quarts. In the engine I run straight 40w.You may want to replace the spark plugs also.

I would recommend starting it on the trailer to be sure it's going to run when you get it to the ramp.Take a garden hose and wrap duck tape around it a couple inches from the end until you have a diameter of 1 1/4 ".Disconnect the end of the hose going to the through hull water pick up.Shove the garden hose in to the water pick up hose and tighten the clamp in the area the duck tape is in.Have someone turn on the water slowly.Start the engine. When it starts have them turn the water on FULL.Do not run engine with out water connected. Let it run a while to confirm it's going to run correctly.Watch your gauges.Run the drive up and down a few times to make sure the trim works. With drive all the way down slip in to forward for about 10 seconds. Then return to neutral and then try reverse for about 10 seconds to be sure tranny is working correct.Take it out and have fun.

Yes, that probably is the easiest way.In the manual they tell you to disconnect the lower hose from the fitting on the trans..Then remove the fitting from the trans. There is a tube made on that fitting which some have a screen strainer over it which you can clean.Others have a tube not connected to the fitting with a spring and washer holding it in.The tube has a slot cut in it which you install with the slot facing down. When re installing it goes tube first with slot down-then washer-then spring-then screw in fitting.

No actual drain plug on those trannys. If you have the model with the screen it may need to be cleaned. That's the fluid going to the trans cooler.

Would I be Better off to pull the lines and drain? It is kinda tight in there being it is only 24' and I go a little over 6'. If that is the way it needs to be done I will find a way. Should I put a new tranny coller on?

It probably would be best to disconnect the line and remove the fitting. It would assure you of getting all the old fluid out.But like I said earlier you may not even have a screen in yours. There should be no reason to replace the cooler as long as it's not leaking. What horse power and year is it?Here is a typical picture of one.You disconnect hose #20 from fitting #2.Then you remove fitting #2 from the trans. It will start to drain when you remove the hose but you will need to remove the fitting to get it all out. This diagram doesn't even show a screen in there.http://www.perfprotech.com/store/ass....aspx#assemblyDoes this look like yours?Does your's have this style cooler.
