IMCO SCX failures ??
I am thinking about trading in my IMCO SC upper for an SCX upper in anticipation of an upgrade in power to about 875 horsepower in my 28' Nordic Heat.
Does anyone have any experience or has had or seen proplems with an SCX? Thanks in advance, Chris |
I would like to know that same thing.

The only "problem" Ive heard really isnt and its from the LaveyCraft guys is that it takes a LOT of power to turn that drive.

Replaced my Teaque with an SCX. No problems and no loss of RPMS or speed.

UD I have heard quite the opposite. Of the two guys I know that have switched from XR drives, one had the same rpm and speed, and the other was 1 mph faster. I think this might be because of the additional weight of the upper, reducing his prop slip by some margin by pushing the prop a little lower in the water. Chris |

Chris At this point Im living vicariously through you and your mods! Im hoping you do it, I may be next depending on what Kap find out about the Xpower. Although I suspect that moves the failure point from breaking drives to breaking transom assemblies. LOVE to see some one as thorough as you test this. Dave |
The thing that I have heard is, the hot ticket seems to be the SCX upper, with the SC lower. Note I have no personal experience with either.

I have heard the same, the SC lower is faster. I also am going to need a change and have been looking at the SCX upper I will need it in a -3 style for my -3 lower. |

Thanks Don The SCX upper was originally intended to be used with the SCX lower, which at this time only comes in a -2 configuration. IF you want it lower than that, you have to use the SCX spacers which come in lengths up to +3. Because of the enlarged gears in the SCX lower, it is proving to not be very efficient except when used as a surfacing drive. IMCO wisely decided to make the SCX upper compatible with their existing SC lower sections. The only thing you need, is to put a conversion down shaft into the lower. They make these conversion shafts in standard thru +3 lengths. So.. not only is there no -1 mid body in the SCX to accomidate the clearances needed for a prop when using the -3 lower, there is also no -1 conversion shaft made. Hope this helps, Chris |
I hope they make a case and componets to accommodate the -3 or make a -3 SCX complete. In the near future. I can not go deeper than i am now, in fact would love to go hgher.
Thanks, Don Glen Harbor Marina |
Don,
You should probably call IMCO in California and ask them about a shorter SCX... but my understanding is that they are not persuing that at this time. From talking to them today...They are looking into making the SCX lower more hydrodynamic by using somewhat smaller gears in the lower and making the lower faster. For now we will just have to settle with the SC lower if we want speed, or the SCX lower if we want reliability. IMCO claims that they have yet to see a broken set of SCX gears. Apparently there were some shifting issues with the first release units due to breaking shift cams, but that has been fixed with a new billett piece. On your boat.. there is always the possibility of raising the motor some. I have heard that you can raise it an inch without re-cutting the transom. Hope this helps, Chris |
Don cant raise his drive anymore. He just reglassed the hole in the transom and raised his ITS box to 1/4" from the swim platform and raised the engine to match. He already has a -3" lower.
I forget how much you raised it Don, must of been at least 2.5-3" right? |

Friend of mine put two of them on a 36 Apache with -2" lowers, runs as fast as he did before. Talked to him the other day and he said 150hrs and no problems. Loves them! He is running 825hp per side, Vortec chargers, can run 95mph on a good day, and he doesnt baby them!
I am setting another friend up with two of them for his 36' Baja, with boxes and transom assemblies. I think Imco has a winner. If you want, pm me I can shoot you a price on what ever you need. Thanks Dick |
Arent these the same as B-Max's?
|
No.. not at all like a Bmax. Use straight cut gears like the XR, but much larger and stronger. All new larger shafts and lower gears are larger. The lower bullet is larger, but with proper setup, speed loss can be minimized.
You can go to Imco's site and take a look at the construction of these drives. Been out over a year and no gear failures. People are starting to trust them and like them!! http://imcomarine.com/ca_store/index...27b93510e84dd1 |
