gimbal bearing extraction tool
Can anyone tell me where I can get an extraction tool for a gimbal bearing on a Bravo 1 leg or send me a photo.

Bajacleveland sells them on ebay.
|
just a 3 jaw slide hammer will do the job, putting it back in needs the special tools.

I don't know if he has a removal tool tho, his bearing install/alignment tool is pretty beefy tho. You could carry it around as a club if need be. |
Thanks C Dezzy + Bob
Yes I have them on Ebay, Heres a link. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...fvi%3D1&_rdc=1 For OSO'ers going straight thru Paypal I can take a little bit off. Joe |
That really looks nice, a slide hammer gets old real fast!

Check the bearing first to make sure it is in per Merc standard.
If it has been out before the person who reinstalled might have been smart enough to put it in backwards. If that is the case you will see two grooves on opposite sides of the bearing race. If that IS the case then just pop a big screwdriver in it and turn it 90 degrees. I am nothing more than a backyard mechanic but I would put them in backwards so that you can do that going forward. I put mine back in with a 2x4 but my assemblies weren't on the boat. 600hp and bravo drives - no problems whatsoever, knock on wood. OH - and buy an alignment tool from whoya (above). |

Just for clarification... What does a gimble bearing alignment tool look like, or a gimble bearing installation tool?
My buddy used a piece of PVC piping the approximate size of his bearing to install his. Cut it down to about a 4" length, but a 2"X4" behind it, and beat it with a hammer... |

Joe I made a crude looking tool years ago to do this, but I have to put a bolt on behind the bearing before pulling. It works but it's one for the RedNecks:drink: |
I rented a blind bearing puller from autozone worked great. but had to buy the alignment tool from the local marina.

How does that grab onto the back of the bearing.

That's not the puller. Thats the Alignment tool and Gimbal driver.
*** sorry i see there are two different links to two different tools *** The ebay link says GIMBAL BEARING PULLER FOR MERCRUISER How does the bearing puller lock onto the backside of the bearing? |
I just inserted a piece of black pipe into the bearing and then screwed a cap on the end from the inside and just used the pipe as the hammer ( just slide it in and out - tha cap will pound the bearing out.
|
I put the bearing in the freezer overnite, they should drop in after a night in the deep freeze.:grinser010:

Another style tool that you can use to remove the Gimble bearing is called a Rear Axle Bearing Puller Set. By putting this puller tool behind the bearing and then using either a big slide hammer or puller tool will get the bearing out, Here is a link to show you what tool I'm talking about.
http://www.google.com/products?sourc...ed=0CCIQrQQwAA Also here is a detailed look at how to use this puller starting with post number 23. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread....ghlight=Gimble |

I use a slide hammer as well. I have had a couple that where just impossible to get out. In that case I used the nut on the slide hammer like a puller. Take a block of wood with a hole in it across the gimble with the slide hammer through the hole then tighten the nut.
The center race of the bearing has adjustment. If it is not aligned you will know it trying to put the drive back on. |

If you're just doing a R&R of your old gimble bearing, why would you need an alignment tool? Isn't the housing going to do that for you?
It is strongly recommended that anytime you pull your drive off the the boat you check the alignment, So that you are sure everything is still aligned correctly and that the engine coupler is well greased up also, Or you risk a engine coupler failure or even a bearing failure, Among some other things that could go wrong. |
You could have a hell of a time getting the driveshaft in without aligning that thing first - especially as you struggle to get everything lined up and the shift cable on, etc....
It's a well spent $30.... |
As said before
