Are the notches in the race facing in or out. If you can see the notches in the housing/race then your life will be incredibly easy, and you can just turn it 90 degrees and then pull it out with your fingers.

If not you can rent a puller and reach through with the jaws, and pull the bearing by pulling against the bellhousing.

do you mean the gimble housing,or are you talking about the bearing.

Maybe in not understanding how its all assembled.

Oh - sorry, misunderstood, thought you meant the bearing housing.

You HAVE to get the bolt on the upper swivel pin, and you could use that kit that he sells at JRMARINE.com.

If you have to get it off, I would just pull the engines. My seals went bad last year and I decided that pulling the engines (despite it being my first time) would probably make the job just as easy....

Didnt want to cut up the casing so was thinking of removing the transom assembly with engine in - can that be done? Seems to be a few through transom bolts and I can check the seals and transom too?

The time spent trying to reach the bolts and chit behind the motor, you'd be hrs ahead to pull the motor. You can have a motor out in an hr in a single. Providing you do have a hoist. Gotta support thr back anyways to try to leave it in. But I would have to think it's possible, if you don't have thru the prop exhaust. The Y-pipe has bolts that I don't think you will get to with the motor in, and it has to come off to remove the transom assembly.
