Replacing Gimbal Ring Bushings
#1
I need to replace Gimbal Ring Bushings, Pins, and Trim Senders.
Can this be done with standard tools or do I need to purchase the special tools for removing the pins?
Do they make after market bushings (#3 in diagram) that are better than these?

Keep in mind Those pins are torqued up to around 150 ft-lb. Only problem is with the 1/2" allen 'socket' you are only using 6 points to drive the pin instead of all 12.
It's up to you, So good luck with what ever way you decide to go here.
PS, I'm not sure on the better bushings or not, Good luck.

I wound up buying the proper tool to get them removed. Even then I used a little heat, some PB Blaster on the inside (where the threads are), and still needed an extension on a breaker bar. They were rough and let go with a loud snap.
Bushing technology has come a long way since the phenolic stuff they used. I'm sticking with stock since I think they are toleranced pretty tight compared to a normal teflon coated bearings and they might have had a reason for doing that.

I started this thread a few years ago after doing this way.
Yes you need a couple special tools. The hinge pin tool is around $25 at a dealer. The spanner wrench is around $25 also at a tool store. The others you can make your self.

If you go this route, Ron Bender is a great guy to work with.

It appears that I just have to replace the side pin bushings. I don't see any play in top and bottom pins yet.
I did notice something in your past thread though about replacing transom seal. I had all the bellows/rubbers all replaced couple years ago. Last year I noticed water leaking in to bilge from the top of the gimbal housing area only when parked on shore which would lower my water line on the transom.
Someone told me that there is a seal back there to replace, but you have to pull the motor to get to it.
Would this be transom seal?
