King Cobra vs Volvo SX vs DPX X dim

Just wondering why newer boats w/ these newer drives are just as fast with less power? With similar hull specs the only varible is the drive. You can obviously mount the drive higher or lower in the hull but is the X dimension of the Volvo SX/ DPX different than the King Cobra?

as far as I know , there is a industry standard for x dim. I beleive it is 14", most of the newer boat have smaller engines but still produce the same if not more HP, and with a smaller engine comes less weight, that means more speed, and you may not see the hull changes, but they are there. I also think they are taking advantage of gearing alot more now.

I did a swap where I removed a King Cobra, and replaced it with a Volvo SX... the x dimension is the same, but the Volvo SX moved the prop back about 3 inches. The SX and the DPX are the same drive but with a different lower unit. The x dimension is the same on the two volvo drives.

Do you remember what that dimension was? I can't find it listed in any posts. Was the SX faster all things being equal? drive height, gearing, etc? What effect does the prop being 3" back give?

Bravo 1 = 21.807
Volvo 280 =22.75
King Cobra = ?
Volvo SX = ?
Volvo duoprop/dpx = ?

volvo 270

can trim be added to a 270 or do i need to go to 280 also is there any other drives that use the same cut out for a swap with out redoing the transom

The SX was faster than the King Cobra.

Don't remember the other info... was quite a long time ago.

when you say X dim, do you mean prop shaft depth? X dim. is a measurment from the engine centerline to the bottom V of the hull, propshaft will vary from drive to drive.

More interested in the prop shaft centerline to engine centerline (input shaft). One guy said the Volvo SX was 24" but I find that hard to believe.

I have a sx in the shop now working on it, I will measure it today and post when I find out.

I measured one & it appears approximately the same as the bravo. You don’t have a King Cobra to measure do you?
