loss of drive

over the 4th weekend the cove was extremely crowded and i was doing a bunch of neutral-drive switches. all of a sudden i realized i couldnt turn very well because my RH motor wasnt pushing. i had just came in off a pretty fast cruise across the very rough waters and it was acting fine. it just free revs now in drive or reverse. i have checked the connection on top of the motor and the cables are both moving up there as they do on the LH motor. i had the wife get in the boat and move the shifter i can feel it engage into drive and the prop doesnt spin as freely but it will still spin reverse with the same effort. but seems to just spin free when shifter is in reverse. any ideas?

The problem is inside the drive, It needs to come apart. Call

I would check the coupler first. I had the same problem once. Took it to a shop and they charged me $300 to remove and take apart the my drive. When the drive checked out ok they THEN discovered the coupler was shot!

whats the best way to check the coupler?

can you see the coupler after you pull the drive?

Yes, shine a flashlight in and you'll see if the splines are gone or not

i cant hardly believe its anything major as i had just came in off a run across the lake and all was well till i was idling in the cove shifting in and out of drive

Did you ask them how much they charge to have someone watch to see if the input shaft spins while somebody turns the prop?? that test should take all of 90 seconds though if they need a flash light they may charge extra...

You could try that, but might not spin that as easy as you think....wise azz
