Thanks for all the replies. I did call George at All American. He shot me a price for rebuilding my drive to a XZ. I was hoping not to have to spend that much ,but will keep that as an option.
ICDEDPPL , Was that a standard XZ drive ? Did All American build it? T500 hps, I will keep that in mind as I am just looking at all options right now . I have heard the XR will slow me down and I hate to give up any speed. I also hate breaking drives so I may not have much choice. |

gears
have been offerd a pair new xz drives can anyone say how much better are they than a 2001 b1 which i have at the moment , going on 28ft 6500 -7000 lb boat twin 496ho stock or should even the xz drives have some upgrades done first , i am certain that there are millions of B1 s working fine on the back of boats but after reading all the theads on drives i am just waiting for the big bang regards paul

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I thought the XZ was a regular bravo upper (helical cut gears) with an XR lower (large prop shaft). Since the uppers are usually what fails I don't see the point in that drive.

Mercruiser Bravo Sterndrives
The latest Mercury Bravo 2002 model drives, serial number 0M10----- and above have an improved upper gear set with thicker floors and heavy duty thrust bearings. These gears are available to upgrade earlier drives. See the details at the left. This is the same gear set (aside from the input shaft) used on the X and XZ drives. In 2006 Mercury redesigned the Bravo upper gear housing. We call it the swept-back housing. The new housing is more rigid and has improved & quieter shift characteristics. In addition to the Bravo I, II and III the X, XZ and XR drives are all in stock. Ask us about the new Mercury Racing integrated transom system. See the links on the left for SternDrive pricing and other info.
