Bulletproof TRS / Trans Package - Input Needed
#1
Having only owned Bravo1 boats in the past I am starting from scratch when it comes to TRS applications. just picked up a 24 with a TRS and want to make it as bulletproof as possible.
What is the best trans to use? Is there any difference in them I need to be away of (tailstock configuration, mounting configuration, etc)? I have a Merc Trans now but heard there are better options.
Mods for the TRS? What is available/popular?

If you want a bulletproof tranny the only way to go is a crash box or shiftable crash box. http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...crash-box.html The crash box is basically a gear set like a manual transmission in a car. Problem with a regular one is you can not shift them under load (ie engine running) so they were named "crash boxes" because people would crash into docks
Lowers can be found for TRS drives to beef them up, many call this set up a Merc #2 drive.

I have a 71C BW tranny, it is an upgarade from the merc trans II. And you do not need to move the motors foward. They can be beefed up to Huber 925 Specs. If you are interested, I will sell it on the cheap side, I no longer own that boat. It is in excellent exterior shape, it does need new clutch plates, it slips. But it would be the best option for you once it is rebuilt. I had my others done at Texoma Marine Gear and they did an awesome job and I never had any problems. I was running 675 HP N/A in the Cigarette Mistress that I used to own. That way you are starting with a quality piece.

I don't think the tranny will be the weak link -- you can build them to hold just about any power within reason that you will put into a 24 ft boat.
with that said the TRS will handle 600 hp if treated with respect, if you are going to have more than 600 hp in a 24 you might look into a konrad-- good to about 750/ 800. After that i'd look into an arneson surface drive.
Sounds like it's going to move!
