That's what I'm thinking also. Probably a Merc Trans ll. There's a complete one on ebay now that sounds decent for $650. You could easily spend that trying to repair that one. If the gerotor broke up there's probably other issues which caused it and it has probably wiped out the pump housing.

Not sure I understand what you mean by the inner element of the oil pump in a TR drive. Always thought the coupler served as a oil pump in them. Is this what your talking about ?

OK. Your talking about the pump in the transmission, not the pump in the drive as you said in your opening post. It sounds as if you have the Merc Trans ll like this one on ebay.

Those transmissions were last made in the early 80's. I know exactly what you are talking about. I have 3 of them for parts and have rebuilt several of them. First off though I can assure you the cooler freezing had nothing to do with the pump. The only way that star piece could have broke is from too much movement of the input shaft. The outer ring like piece can not move as it spins tightly in the pump housing which is bolted down tight to the case. Both of those pieces would have to be replaced as a set. More than likely if you just replace those it will happen again. If you move the input shaft up and down I'll bet there's a lot of play in it. The star like piece is probably moving around with the shaft but the outer ring like piece cannot move any. Either the bearing or bushing on the front of the planetary is probably bad. Most likely the bushing. Also be sure there is a pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft that the transmission input shaft goes into for extra support. This transmission should be totally disassembled and inspected now that it's out especially the bearing and bushing that's right behind that pump. In short the inner element is moving around too much and the outter element cannot move so the inner element breaks. Transmission probably had low pressure from the wear between those 2 parts before it finally broke. This is why I recommended that trans on ebay. Also if you do just look for another trans be sure to designate if it's for a Ford or GM. Different bellhousings. Here is a site of a guy which does these trannys but believe me the parts are high. That's why I say you can find a complete one cheaper.

I have plenty of oil pump gears. A used inner gear is 50.00. Be certain that you have a crankshaft support bushing for the input shaft. Generally speaking, the lack of this support bushing is a common contributor to pump failure . www.kcmarinetr.com
