Default lower shift cable & water hose help

89 bravo 1 with a 454 . I went to the dealer for the water hose bushings they said I needed the $ 26.95 tool to install them, does anybody have one for sale before I buy one from the dealer. and one more thing do I really need the $ 39 lower shift cable adjusting tool or is there another way.

thanks Dave

I cut the hoses off and used a flexible shaft nut driver to get the clamps off. I used a screw driver disconnect shift cable and small wrench inside to install the existing cable linkages. What does the adjustment tool do?

I took a Sherwin Williams paint stirrer, cut a notch in it with a radial saw and saved myself the 39 bucks.

I have bravos and have had the entire thing apart (engines out, transom assembly off the boat and completely dissassembled) and have NEVER bought any special Merc tools.

the brass end of the shift cable is stuck in the bell housing. I cut the cable as close to the housing as I could, removed the bell housing put penetrating oil on it for days then added some heat and broke an easy out trying to turn it. is it threaded in or can I just pound it out ? I think I have the older style cable but won't know until it comes out. the shank on the older model is 3/8 and new stile is 7/16 so here is a link page 4A-21 thanks

My merc manual states the old size hole has to be drilled for the new size cable. I actually had to drill out an old cable one time. Started with a small bit and went very slow so not to break bit. Larger bit just cleaned the cable and sealant out that someone had installed.

Dave
(1) the hose insert tool can be fab. by some welding fingers on a scrap socket. Get a new insert from your dealer and take a look at it there are 4 small notches that need the little fingers to lock into.
(2)the cable tool is a bit pricey but it is the tool that Mercruiser came up with and it will help you set the cable at the right starting point.
hope this helps MAC

I did buy a hose insert tool and new hoses off the Internet for maybe $15-20.
