Yes I believe a Borg Warner transmissions are the same 71c has one forward clutch plate and 72c has two forward plates, (I believe) I had a 1987 400 with a Borg Warner 72c, should be interchangeable! I have a #2 speedmaster if you need one. Hope you find a trans soon

Tag will be on the port side towards the front facing up. If it's a red tag and the model number starts off as 10-17 than it's a 71c. If it's a green tag and the model number starts off as 10-18 than it's a 72c.

Is it possible that ID tag is for the engine? They did make the 400 cyclone from '80 to '86.

Most likley thats a 72 series. You need a 1018-014. The part that connects to the drive comes from Mercury. That should be easy to find here, if not we have a bunch of them rebuilt with new bearings & seals ready to go.

The tag is on the bell housing for the trans, So I am guessing that its for the bellhouse not the trans, I am gonna go double check and see if I can find a tag on the trans it self tonight. The motors are Mark IV 502's.

Left Hand, I ran two L/H rotating drives on and older cat, they are stronger by design!

I have 3 left hand drives, and 1 left hand prop and 1 right hand prop. I'll probably just end up selling a bunch of other parts and buy a new left prop...
