Preventing external shaft seal failure?

Obviously the external portion of the shaft seal is not lubricated and is exposed to the elements. What, if anything, do you guys use to keep this seal from rotting? Silicone lube of some type, marine grease... ???

What drive seal ? Or what seal you talking about?

The external prop shaft seal, specifically on #6's if that helps.

The external seal of a #6 is really a wiper seal for keeping water out. I have found using 101 grease works best for me. I use between each seal and around the out side of external seal. I have never had a problem. I do a lot of 6's on production performance boats, non-racing. You can call me if you have further questions on that at; 954 237 0332 ask for John.
