Default B3 Shift Cable Adjustment

I am replacing the shift cable, housing, and bellows on my 97 B3 drive. The shop manual indicated 2 adjustment tools, one on the Bell Housing side and one on the engine side. I hate to buy the tools for a probably 1 time use. Has anyone ever done this without the tools successfully or am I just setting myself up to wasting a lot of time before I break down and get the tools?

You need the tools, otherwise you are setting yourself up for trouble.
