How do the SEI aftermarket outdrives hold up

I have a alpha 1 gen 2 counter that broke a shaft.. Anybody know how the aftermarkets hold up, 3 yr no fault warranty ?

Run one of their lowers(essentially an alpha) on my 3 liter outboard, 2 years no problems.

I've heard all good things

I have their Bravo Lower on my Velocity 260 w/496 mag. I have almost 2 seasons and over 200 hours. So far not a single issue. Plus they have a no questions asked 3 year warranty. I was even told by one of their sales people (before I bought) if I leave the drive down and drag it up my boat ramp, they will still repair or replace it.

If memory serves me, I paid right around $950 shipped to my door for a Brand New Bravo (SEI Version). I ordered directly from SEI.

We run them tru our shop and have yet to have a problem. Prices are very affordable and yes they back there claimed warranty up!!! trim rams , alpha and b1's cant complain

The only negative I have heard is that the paint does not hold up.

Have sold about 20 Bravo lowers and had no complaints.
Great warranty if needed.

They're a local company to me, and I know a lot of follk who run their drives here. No problems. SEI is a very robust alternative to stock Merc stuff at a fraction of the cost.

950?! That is incredible.

CigDaze 08-04-2011 09:23 AM

Yep!

Bravo Lowers are $950. Complete Alphas are $1300.
And everything comes with a 3-year warranty.

The only thing missing from their line-up are Bravo uppers.

Well I hope they will make them. I'm not really a merc hater, but love it when merc gets a run for their money. It's needed.

Tis true.........

I have installed quite of few of these units, (but never on an HP application) and yes they seem to be decently constructed, and yes they have an awsome warranty but........As Griff mentioned, the paint, the corrosion protection is inadaquate, so don't buy it and expect it to last like a Merc unit if you leave it in H2O. The paint will last 3 years and a day.

I have read on other sites that they work well on smaller boats but when you get to the bigger deep V's no so good. I have 350 mags and the alphas are only rated at 300hp so they are at their limit already.. I know they have a 3yr warranty but the turn around is close to a month never mind the cost to ship. our season here is not long just not sure I want to take a chance..

low_psi 08-06-2011 08:10 PM

I have been leaving my Velocity in the water quite a bit this season (it comes out once a week for a good scrub down) and so far the paint has held up very well. I have a small knick in the skeg and the paint in that area is holding up well. Granted I boat in fresh water..........

As far as using on a HP application. I don't baby my boat. My SEI drive now has 140hrs on it. While my 496 mag isn't a huge hp motor, the drive has held up well. I believe they will warranty up to 400 hp. (i don't remember the exact number). But if I blew one up, I would simply order a new one Immediately, then send the blown up one in for warranty and when it comes back would be a ready to use spare. ANy (good) shop around me has a 1-2 month back log this time of year. So wether it is an SEI or a Merc drive, if I blew it up I'd be looking at a month minimum anyway.... Oh yeah shipping via UPS is only $50 . THe lower unit fits in a fairly small box and doesn't weigh too much.
