I'm in the process of finishing up my project (first power boat) 90 235 baja and before I drop the motor in I am trying to figure out all the wires in the bilge area. I read a post about the blue and green wire on the trim pump control up and down movement on the trim switch at the helm.
I press the switch at the heml and the pump only moves one direction so I suspect the switch is bad because it doesn't move very well and just seems bad. To make sure the pump works in both directions I take a hot lead from the battery and touch it to both the green and blue solenoid and the pump pump cycles both directions. I then ohm the red, blue and green wires coming off the throttle trim switch. The red and green wire ohm out fine, but I'm not getting anything from the blue. At that point I go looking around back there and see that the blue wire doesnt go directly to the round 3 prong plug that plugs in to the trim pump assembly. I see that the red, green and blue go from the front of the boat in a 5 wire strip with two other colors (don't remember what they are). I see the blue wire plugs into a connection and then goes out the gimble assembly. I see there are two sets of wires (two sets of two = 4 wires going through the gimble/transom assembly) I ohm the blue wire at the plug before it goes out the transom and its good from that point to the switch. The 4 wires going out the transom must have shorted or something because the plastic coating and color is mostly gone and in some spots have bare wires. I assume these wires go to the trim position units on the outside gimble assembly.
Does the blue wire go to the outside and then comes back to the pump? I assume thats why the blue wire isn't working the trim pump because the wires are screwed going to the outside then back in and its leaving the ciruit open....correct?
My new motor is ready and I planned on installing it tomorrow after work and have arranged to use the fork lift from a shop next to my business. Can I change these wires and trim sending units after the motor is in the boat? Can I rewire the blue wire to go to the pump and not the trim units so that I can get the pump working? I have a date with the river next weekend and I just came across this problem today while installing the steering cable.
Thanks for any help you guys can offer!
