What #5's Worth
#2
In my opinion, it all depends. Do the #5's have polygon or splined upper gears (early #5's had polygon upper gear sets). What is the overall ratio of the drives? Do the propshafts need to be speedy sleeved or replaced because they leak fluid by the rear seal? Have the skegs been shortened/replaced/welded on? Are the box's Mercury or Stellings? In my opinion, Stellings are more desirable because they have the side inspection ports while the Mercury's don't. Are the bearing carriers in the box's in need of repair? Are the gimbles #5 style or are they the older #3 vintage?
Give me a call if you want any help with new gears/shafts etc. for these drives as I have both.

I have a pair of Boxes (Stellings) with side inspection plates, wing plates and tie-bar, Rebuilt "green tag" Trannys with the extra plates installed (1000hp), Carriers with shafts, and two SSM#5 drives with spacers. All look as if they came off the line, I will sell as a package deal....
#5
The #5 gimble has 1" pins for the trim cylinders, a solid face hat/helmet and the hat/helmet is not scalloped around the outer perimeter. The side pins are 1" and easily removed behind caps on the gimble ring.
You can use either gimble for all the above drives. The mounting pattern in the hat/helmet are both the same.
