Default mercruiser drive - choices

have a pair of mercruser inline 6cyl 292 cu. inch engines late 1960s. can a new alpha drive and transom assembly be mated to these engines? looking to possibly have engines rebuilt and installed in my magnum 25.

i am pretty sure the flywheel cover (what gets called the bellhousing in the automotive world) is the same as big and small block v8's. so it should work. biggest question is how long is the engine compartment? motor is a good 8-10 inches longer than a 350. and can you still get exhaust manifolds? and will you be able to in 5 years?

One of the members here just pulled a pair or 292's out of a '79 255 Formula Liberator so I'm pretty sure you are ok. The In line six and the SBC V8 use the same bolt pattern for the Bell Housing. Your six's are probably 2: piece rear main seal and you need an early 2: piece rear main seal flywheel.

if you get ready to do it I have everything you need to convert to Mercruiser Pre Alpha No 1 Transom Assemblies. The No 1 T/A's will accept Alpha Gen I drives. Jason Y on this forum has the exhaust set up and other stuff you need for those 292's.

The answer is yes ..it can be done and I think it would make a cool restoration project.

Some of the early in-lines had shorter splined shafts so check on that as well.
