Default alpha transom rebuild advice needed

Boat is an 87 formula 242 330hp alpha.

I started out having a trim issue and after cleaning my TL contacts it took care of my problem. While doing so i noticed my water inlet hose was in bad shape. I removed the out drive from the gimbal. After some research I found i need a hing pin tool now witch i found on amazon $13. I have never done this before and am looking for advice on what other tools i might need. I figure if im going to be replacing the water hose i might as well go ahead and do the drive shaft bellow and gimbal bearing also. Is there anything els you would recommend i do while im in there? Do i need an aliment tool to replace the bearing?

Thank you for any and all help, this is my first boat and i am completely new to what im doing. Need to have it going for a trip i have planed at the ozarks may 25th

yep..do the lower shift cables, and use the good merc/sieerra bellows and hose, the cheap ebay ones suck, kink and go bad to easily. while you have the drives off do the impellors too.

If you have not done this before I recommend you have some one do it for you. If the Gimbal Assembly has not been removed in several years you may not be able to get it off easily due to corrosion. This can be frustrating to a beginner.

If you are under a time constraint you will become irritated that you can't get it done in time.

Then again...you might be a gifted wizard that encounters no problem at all...not likely on a 25 year old boat.

Think this though before you get too far into it.

This seams to be the best deal i have found. Is there any way to know if these are genuine merc pars or cheap aftermarkets that i would have issues with?

Well, it is called MercAftermarkets

Seems all bellows kits are either OEM Merc or Sierra. Usually the prt # is a give away.

A thread a few weeks ago and many have seen no difference between the 2 brands, if in fact there are different brands. Have a couple lake buddies that used Sierra kits and no problems.
