Default XR lower drive shaft run-out?

What is the acceptable (if any) run-out tolerance for the lower drive shaft? Putting together a spare, the shaft I've got measures .009 out just below the upper spline when spun in a lathe. Useable or junk?

Thanks,

Kurt

Kurt,
you need to be careful when you measure run out on those shafts. The unmachined portions are not very true. I check them between two dead centers and check the run out on each end to get a feel for how good the holes in the end are. Then I measure the run out on both of the bearing mount sufaces. Any damage to the ends and the centers can be off. Which should show up when you check the ends. But that is an unmachined surface on the top end. You need to get an average of how much the ends are off and then factor that in on the center reading.. Hope this makes sense.. Just what I find when I measure a shaft.

Thanks Dick, we had the pinion gear end in the lathe chuck. When measured at the bearings, it was out a total of .004 (.002?)

I was wondering how true the unmachined portions were. I'll press the bearings off and measure at the surfaces.

I appreciate your response!
