Default Broke XR

Yesterday I was out in the boat. I came off plane, the idle sounded rough. Before I could even take a look, my alarms sounded. Open hatch, NO GEAR OIL!

Stiil idling in forward at the time. Seconds later, poof, felt like I put it in neutral.

Get boat home, Long story.....

I notice that one of the studs on the top cap is broke off.

I took the top cap off, nothing jumps out at me. When I turn the upper shaft, it seems smooth and quiet.

When I turn the prop shaft, it makes sound, sounds like it's coming from where the upper and lower meet.

What's is likely the issue?

Should I flush the drive out with anything? I plan on taking it somewhere ASAP to get looked at.

Either broke the intermediate shaft or broke the spiral shaft on the upper gear set. Either way you're looking at all the bearings being gone.
