Default Drive help - new guy learning

Im looking for suggestions. We are looking to upgrade both drives and motors in our 29' Powerquest enticer. Currently we have the stock 502's with bravo 1 drives. This winter we are having the engines redone and should push out about 625-650 Hp each. Clearly the drives need to be upgraded to handle the Hp increase. I have been reading a lot about standard vs -2" as well as brand of drives. Some have told us that the -2" should give us a higher top end speed. Is there any truth to that? We don't have an unlimited budget so cost is an issue. What are your thoughts on the length/mfg/line of drives. My initial thought would be upgrade the internals on the uppers and then go with an Imco -2" sc lower. Am I at all on the right track?
Any input or knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Ricky

sell yours and buy another one that someone sunk a ton of money into..your most likely looking at 40 k minimum by the time its all said and done..you could find a bigger boat for the same money..
this one already has hydraulic steering,500 efi's and 7 yrs newer and 4' bigger and you will be over 10 k ahead..

Sell your boat and buy one already done. SELL it and BUY a different boat, or keep your stock!

With the engine upgrade you are still going to wear out Bravo gears every year. It sucks. And it makes boating not fun. It does not matter how much you "beef" up the drives, they still will not hold together. I have complete upgraded IMCO SC's and blow them up every summer. The Merc XR gears that are in them (along with the BMax lower, the teague, the All american drive, max machine worx, etc) pit very easy and break teeth off.

IF you do upgrade you boat, wait, just sell it and buy one thats already faster!

Based on the current market that is not a terrible alternative. If done right the upgrade will cost more than another boat. It really is not the ideal hull for it either.
