B1 are cheap, easy to find, and supper efficient as far as fear drag is concerned. Run what you have with a spare waiting. If it blows too soon then start shopping. But if you are heavy on the sticks and air it out an xr isn't gonna solve your problems either.

+1

I disagree with putting 700+ HP in your boat and saying you won't run it hard because you don't want to break the drive. WTF? Put a 496 in it then. Put a fukin XR on it and run it like you stole it. Just throttle back when airborn and watch the hole shots.:whistle:

Tks for the input guys. I never said I won't run it hard, i just don't run hard all day:)

I agree run it the way it is and use your head. Buddy ran 700 Hp in front of a stock Bravo for 2 1/2 seasons on a Check 253 and who knows how many before he bought the boat. Finally let go this year and he upgraded to an X drive.

Why did mine grenade in 7 hours behind a 525 in a 22' boat? I guess because I run it hard on big water :/.

not sure why, maybe a bad part, maybe an oversite when it was rebuilt? don't know.... I have been very lucky running a bravo for years with a stupidly large amount of HP with out a problem. "Knock on wood"

Operator error?????:party-smiley-004::lolhit:

How many hours were on it prior the repower????

Chit happens and stuff breaks. Sometimes its just bad luck. I blew apart a drive 5 hours after I bought a boat with no hole shot and no air time. The stock Bravo 1 drive had over 200hrs on it behind a 525SC in a 5500# boat and 2 hours of that was my sea trial.

BTW, the Bravo 1 drives used to be rated up to 600hp and were factory with 600SC packages.

I bought the boat new. The 1X had maybe 200 hours on it with the 496 HO and most were on inland lakes with no air. Now I boat mostly on Lakes St. Clair, Erie, Huron and the Rivers. I run hard and fast I run just under wide open for periods with bursts of WOT. I do get a lot of air and try to work the throttles but I can't always synchronize rpms when running in mixed up water. I'm talking speeds of cruising 65-70 with lots of runs over 80 and top end of 83-85. I like to run my boat hard. I guess that's why I blew my 1X. Now that I have 8 seasons under my belt with this boat I run it even harder. The 525 EFI is a "racing" engine, isn't it ;).
Anyway, it's no surprise that my upper gear set quickly called it quits. What is amazing is that the XR seems to be so much stronger but with straight cut gears it seems that all of the power is being loaded onto 1 or 2 small gear teeth the entire time. No wonder those gears are so expensive.
I'm surprised at all of the Bravo 1(X) success stories from boaters claiming big power and hard running and airing out in boats heavier than mine. Yup, really surprised to hear that. Kind of like putting a BB in front of an alpha.
