Alpha gen 2 to bravo 1 conversion

I have an alpha 1 gen 2 that am not happy with it I know it's a time bomb with a 454. What do I need to buy to swap to a bravo 1 drive?

Thanks

the inner and outer transome plate/gimble assembly along with the trim cyl's and the drive itself....though i have heard the trim cylinders will work from one to the other but not sure on that one. you can re-use the hyd pump...oh and a new coupler while its all apart....thats about it.

It's even easier with the gen 2, just swap the helmet so that Bravo will fit. Everything will will work. You will how ever have a gap between the pin for the ram's.

Two options run it with the gap, or put in an aluminum filler. I've seen both done.

Thanks a lot guys will I have to pull the motor out?

You might want to add one of those thing-a-ma-jiggies that sucks up water to cool the engine.

Yes you need a new water pick up belt driven and another 3k minimum, what kind of boat do you have and it`s weight. I have a 454/alpha in my Formula 242LS and it`s fine you just take it easy.

It's a Jaws 24 I just been told that the alpha won't hold much with the 454

check mercury,I am pretty sure that they still make a set of hardened upper gears for the alpha's and they do work, they are supplied by mercury specifically for that set up with a 454.

The cheapest option would be to buy a complete boat with bravo running gear off craigslist or the like..... Do a complete swap alpha to bravo & bravo to alpha....then re sell the boat.

More work, less $
All the parts will be exactly where ya need em.

Will have to plug a couple holes on the donor boat when going bravo to alpha.

kakarot 12-20-2012 07:46 PM

I guess I would have to check with mercury, is there any speed difference from just swapping the drives from alpha to bravo?

Amarket Owner 12-21-2012 10:50 AM

Years ago i sold a 20 foot boat with a 454 hopped up with an old #1 drive before the alpha drive.
I told the buyer the motor was too much for the drive and we proped for over rpms to take the load
off the gears and told him not to hit from the hole, but just race from running planeing speed. The drive is still alive. The worst time for a unit is when the boat is nose up, comming up and the prop cannot turn but the torque goes to full. Baby it and it will last.

kakarot 12-21-2012 11:30 AM

So as long as I go easy off the hole shot (which I do) It can last a while then? Speed wise is there any op speed gain from a bravo?

With the same engine in front, its my take that an Alpha takes less Hp to turn and is also more hydrodynamic through the water. All else being equal the Alpha my be faster.

masi242 12-21-2012 08:33 PM

You will not gain any speed,at this point unless you are going to put more hp in the motor you will be fine. Take it easy out of the hole and use your trim tabs if you have them when you have more people aboard.

Not real sure of that.
When a boat reaches it's point of maximum possible speed for it's engine the load on the prop has become so great that the engine can no longer accelerate and is then at it's peak torque.
Coming out of the hole the prop and engine are both accelerating up till they reach their point of maximum load limited by the peak engine torque.
IMO max load on the drive would be at peak engine torque or WOT.

Thanks a lot guys I guess I'll just stay with the alpha pamper it till it breaks

Pliant 12-22-2012 07:42 PM

Avoid catching any air, if you do you unload the drive and when she renter's there is hell to pay....4500 lb boat 400lbs of touqre 4800 rpm amd instant full loading...:helmet:

MuddyToy 10-16-2013 11:11 AM

I am running two alpha drives behind some built 355's making 420hp and almost 400trq, my boat is almost 5800 lbs and I beat on it a lot, seems as long as you back out of the sticks when you go flying they seem to last. Well that's my take on it for the past two summers!
