Default Borg Warner trans conversion to SCS Zero drag, Is it possible???

Can I remove the original Borg Warner transmissions from a TRS install and replace them with SCS Zero Drag transmissions? Is this a plug and play swap or does it take a hardware kit to make things happen?

I'm just seeing info and wondering about this kind of a swap if I buy a 357 with TRS. I understand the BW trans drags down 50HP where the zero drag trans does not. The swap just seems like free speed but I don't know about these products and their interchangeability.

What can you tell me?

TIA

i assume you are talking about crash boxes??if so you can use them but alot more expensive, and not docking friendly for a pleasure boat.

Yes, crash boxes. Do they bolt up to the original bellhousing or does it take different mounting methods?
What is "not dock friendly" about?

you have to kill the motor every time you change gear.

A stock Velvet drive eats 15-18 HP at 5200 RPM, a modifed one 13-15, and our dry sump 9-10.

You would have a hard time finding a tailstock to connect the crash box to a TRS, and there is a reason they call them crash boxes.

You would gain more speed by lab-finishing your props.

Oh yes, I see, that would be too much "race" kind of behavior for a pleasure boat. Sounds like I could wear out starters and dock rash the boat that way.

Thanks for that info. This element alone could be a deal breaker for me.

Ok, so when I hear someone say something like "that TRS transmission robs you of 50HP" they are combining the trans AND drive in this kind of a statement. Right? It would make more sense with the numbers you have here added to the 20-25HP of the drive. So if I'm looking at the trans alone I can only split hairs down to the 9-10 you mention for the dry sump and not really eliminate the trans drag down to "0".

Very enlightening and thanks for that info. I have tried to do some homework and dig up specs etc but I am learning more from this thread than what some can tell me or what I can find to compare easily.

Does "modified" mean the "update" where the number of discs are biased for forward more than reverse? If not then what modification makes this reduction in drag?
If I were to throw HP at the trans to get more speed then what are the limits of HP on a Velvet drive trans?

The engines of the boat in question are stroked which is my preference but only 489cid. I would prefer more like 540 or 572cid but then where do I cross the line of the trans rating?

You guys are really teaching me something here so please let me ask some more questions if I may.
