Default Broken Gimbal

Has anyone changed out a broken gimbal ring on a mercury 6? Does it have to be done by a certified merc tech? Does it require special tools?

It's a $3500 part, but I can't see that it's a difficult job, needing specialist tools. Probably easier to do with the transom on the work bench, what sort of driveline is it?
