Default To shower, or not to shower....

I had 454 420's, with a few "extras".....making combined flywheel at 1009hp.

Now, I am dropping in new Merlin 540's with B&M non chilled 250's that have combined flywheel at 1498....

These are gonna sit in front of Borg red tags and refreshed trs's.

As you know, no exhaust through trs's, so lower drive temp there. I am hearing varied opinion over drive shower.

A) None available
B) none needed

My x is remaining stock till I kill them, but what is the real story here?

Also, what are the two two-prong sensors for? One is center top, on is port side toward rear....

No shower on my boat. This has been debated a lot and I'm not convinced that they actually lower overall oil temp. I'm also not convinced that our drives are running high and dry. I know they get chalky deposits on them but it's what's inside that matters.

What's the theory here?

Would it not be more economical to sell the X's when they're still alive?

I've been told that there not needed, but with the more power I can't see it hurting anything. I've also never looked for them either for TRS's. I know on another site someone put a temp sensor where the check level plug is and the temp only dropped 1-2 degrees with the showers, those were Bravos too I believe.

I would say if your going to be running the boat long and hard for extended periods then try to build something for them, if not then no point I guess. The TRS's also store more gear oil then Bravos so that's something to think about too. With the drives hanging lower in the water the oil prob doesn't get as warm as oil in a Bravo.

On a TRS, the coupler (upper to lower shafts) also performs as an oil pump. With the lower gear case always submerged and the oil circulating, there is no need for a drive shower.

Bravo drives do not circulate oil. Some have seen a benefit in this application.

I'd be more concerned about the transmissions handling the power increase.

He's talking about his X-dimension.

Biggus is right !!! worry about the transmissions first....Once you start pumping power to them they may not last very long ..... Good luck.
