Arneson users

I have a question about trimming my ASD-8s How far do you trim up when running full throttle? I'm running trips on a 50 Hustler
Thanks Ken

Pokher Ace 05-02-2013 09:41 AM

I wish that I was running them and could help you. Hows the boat coming along?

Katabatic 05-02-2013 09:42 AM

I have a 32 and she likes to be set at 0, or neutral. But I only have twins. I would give Rik a call @ 415 485 0788. I saw your girl at Lilly's and she is beautiful. I hope to see her tail, rooster that is, on the bay one day soon.

laszlo01 05-02-2013 10:36 AM

Any pics of the set up ? I am just wrapping up a 7M upgrade

My KAAMAS like neutral as well I have run it up alittle and the boat really does not gain or loose speed. I hope it helps ya!

Ok I did not think going past 0 would be wise.
below are a few photos. I did just have the paint altered and had AL's custom interior redo my cockpit. I will update photos soon. I’m still finishing all the small things like new sound system and 120MPH GPS Speedo:)

Very cool pics Ken. Looking good for sure. Keep us posted on your running numbers and settings.

I guess I should also ask about trim tabs. Do you keep them completly up and out of the way or do you use them to remove some lean at high speeds?

I have twin kaamas on a 30, they like 0, no positive or negative, just straight out the back. I have stops on my 280 k planes and they only go up high enough to be inline with the hull. I used them once and they are dangerous. I just leave them up almost all the time. If you drop one side to fast the boat will want to turn on you. My boat is pretty light, with a stripped cabin so that may be a different than yours.

Well she's in the water and every time I give it a good amount of throttle it goes all over the place. It feels like the back of the boat is lifting. I'm sure this has more to do with the props than the drives. I do have a call into Rik and Hering to try and find out what is going on.

Ya know mine did that with the 6 Blades the boat would walk up on the blades. I have 5 blades like you and the boat likes them. Have you tried 4 blades? maybe that would calm it down alittle

302Sport 06-20-2013 10:29 AM

It's cause the back of the boat is trying to take off like the space shuttle with 2100hp worth of exhaust pointing straight at the water. :party-smiley-004:

ken sampson 06-20-2013 11:26 AM

That’s funny:)
I see another 50' Hustler listed for sale with Trips and ADS-8s and the photo shows he is running a 5 blade on the out sides and a 4 blade on the center.
Not sure if this is the case but I have a call into him also.

So you mean when you throttle the boat the steering moves, or the boat moves, or the boat moves and the steering does not react? I called you back last night, you were not in.

ken sampson 06-20-2013 01:44 PM

Hey Rik,
The steering wheel is not moving but feels like the bow is steering. So yes the boat moves.
Ken

Rik 06-20-2013 03:41 PM

Where is the LCG?

ken sampson 06-20-2013 04:14 PM

I will have to work on getting that. I did just go for another run and I noticed if I trim up to 2 on my gauge it really calms down. but it’s all rooster tail and no speed. 0 would be in line with the hull at the transom.

ken sampson 06-20-2013 05:37 PM

Rik what are your thoughts about adding weights to the transom? I have no other way of shifting weight and now that you mention LCG I’m almost sure I need more transom weight on this Monster.
Ken

ken sampson 06-20-2013 06:05 PM

I will get some sand bags to give it some weight on the rear. Maybe have 200Lbs on hand and start with 100 and see how it goes.
Thank you

mlb75 06-21-2013 10:16 AM

If the weight ends up being the ticket I've got a couple hundred pounds of lead if you need it. I've got it left over from my wake boarding days when 2000#'s of water ballast just wasn't enough. PM me if you're interested. BTW the transom of your boat looks amazing, if I ever went back to inboards I'd definitely go the arneson route.

For what it's worth I think you may be onto something, apparently one of the boats in my area had to add ~500#'s to the transom to get it right, and as soon as they did the boat ended up handling great and they were able to get it running considerably faster. Granted it shouldn't be faster with more weight but if that's what it took to make it safe to run faster so be it.

hogie roll 06-21-2013 12:59 PM

I've been curious about this as well. When you drop a bunch of weight off the transom from lighter engines or drives. Adding rockers sounds like the solution, in my head at least. Definitely try the props first :D

Rik 06-21-2013 01:14 PM

What are the rake of the propellers on this boat?

The faster you want to go, the further aft the CG really wants to be. If CG is too far forward for the speed, you'll be running at less than the optimum angle of attack, and end up with a lot of extra wetted surface area. As more boat comes up out of the water, and the center of lift goes further aft, you either need more bow lift or CG shift to compensate. The Arnesons don't give much bow lift compared to a bevel shaft drive owing to the drive angle geometry, so the proper setup for Arnesons is probably going to have LCG further aft.

ken sampson 06-24-2013 07:05 AM

All three are the same 17.5x37-18 5 Blade
Thanks
